This is only made pos...sible by people like you, who are looking for ways to make life a little better for children and youth in need. Along with providing some gifts, we also set up days where we take youth (who would not have opportunity for various reasons) on day trips for meals, movies, fun events, and more. The goal is always to let all youth know they are valued and this is one way we make it happen. We are going the last week of April and it is going to be Epic. 1st of 3 Major Undercurrent Announcements For the past decade Undercurrent has strived to provide free, or low cost programs, for hundreds of youth in the CBR...M. Running youth centres in Cape Breton is a money losing endeavour as we are here to serve many children and youth who cannot afford anything we do. We are presently running over twenty weekly programs, many for free, some which include meals, and some that cost up to $3. Nothing is really free though, and it does cost us something to run free programs and provide up to 10,000 meals per year. This is a big reason we do some programs which cost money as they help cover the expenses for free programs. However, our absolutely ridiculous child / family poverty numbers in Cape Breton mean that our low cost programs fees are still a barrier for many children and families. While Undercurrent can’t answer all the poverty issues on our Island, we can do out part. Studies show children / youth who are given positive programs / mentors / and safe space are far more likely to break out of cycles of poverty and addiction. So our goal is simple, we want to remove all barriers which stop children / youth in poverty from having these opportunities. So we are taking a Huge Step of Faith and are announcing as of Sept 2019 all Undercurrent Programs will be ‘pay what you can’. We are going to remove all regular fees and people can pay what they can, even if it is nothing. This will open our doors and programs to some of the most deserving young people in our communities. In order to do this we have set up a child sponsorship program. The idea is simple, we need to find one hundred sponsors, per youth centre, so we can cover the expenses of programs, staff, and meals. I am pleased to say since launching our child sponsorship program we already have 15 sponsors, so we are well on the way. With one hundred sponsors, donations from those who can afford programs, our fundraisers, and grants we will be able to cover the expenses of each centre. We will also be able to provide additional programs. I am asking you to please consider becoming part of helping our children / youth know they are wanted, cared for, have access to programs, and have access to meals on a weekly basis. Also, we are hoping that organizations, businesses, Churches, etc will take on sponsoring a number of children and youth. All sponsorship is tax receiptable as well. I want to send a big thank you for everyone for supported the work we do here in Cape Breton for kids, youth, and families. In 2018 we ran 20 weekly programs and served thousands of meals. We had a new YFC staff member join us, Jodi, and many new volunteers. Our Adventure program continues and we started using Abbey By'e the Sea, our new property. A group of local females started Shred Sirens and we just ended the year with a Christmas community dinner put on by Lionel, Mary,... and family. So much to be thankful for. We have a great group of people trying to make a difference in our community. As we move into 2019 we are going to be announcing a strategy to make all our programs free for low income families over the next few days.
