Patience Goes A Long Way... He begins each day by ensuring that all is in its place at the Day Program. Starting with a complete walk-through of the building going down to the detail of all chair placements along with completing a comfort test every morning by sitting in each section. Brayden is our keeper of order and routine. When this order is disrupted it can throw his day off and cause him to feel out of place and uncertain with how to carry on. With a lot of other peop...le that share the space this happens quite often. Through patience, our staff have come along side him to help walk through these challenges together. We are so proud of Brayden and his accomplishments, he is learning how to express his care for his friends at work and is communicating in a gentle way.

As we are rushing out the door, I look at my daughter as she struggles to put on her shoes and tie them up. Th...e quick thing for me to do would be to put them on her myself, or better yet just leave her barefoot, The patient thing would be to wait for her and channel my frustration and comments into my tapping finger and say nothing, the empowering thing would be to drop to my knees beside her and remind her how to cross the bunny ears as she ties them herself. By engaging in an empowering way my patience builds her trust in me and her knowledge of my love for her grows a little deeper. Patience is one of the tools we use when working with people with intellectual disabilities to build trust and affirm that they are loved
