Announcement of the loss of River Leo and Peter Oleski It is with great sadness that we share the news that community members, River Leo and his father, Peter Oleski, were found deceased on the afternoon of Thursday, October 29, 2020. We grieve this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to the Leo, Oleski and Pierre families. The two men had ventured out mushrooming on the afternoon of Thursday, October 22, 2020. I cannot fully express my gratitude for the women and men ...who searched for River and Peter, said Kuwpi7 Skalulmecw Chief Dean Nelson. The support we received from our neighbours in Pemberton was overwhelming, as was the dedication and commitment of those who combed the mountains looking for the men. We ask that everyone respect the wishes of the family and give them the time and space they need. Information on a gathering will be forthcoming.

Tuesday, October 27th 2020 Update The Líwat Nation would like to thank Pemberton Search and Rescue and all the Search and Rescue crews from across the Province who have helped us in our search for Peter and River. Search and Rescue has made the difficult decision to take an Operational Pause for three days and will return on Saturday October 31st, 2020. We are anticipating 150-200 SAR volunteers from across the province on Saturday, along with the full resources available f...rom the Province of BC. In the meantime, we know that our dedicated community volunteers will continue the search. The weather is changing and we are going to experience a warming trend over the next few days. This will likely melt snow and has the potential to expose new evidence. If you see something please do not touch or disturb it. Set a GPS mark, flag it, photograph it and please report it to the Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police. Please remember to stay safe. Please continue to check in/check out, hike in at least groups of two and dress for the changing weather. The Pemberton Search and Rescue explored the three lakes near where the bottle was found and are confident that they have fully searched these areas. Please continue to track your routes and share the .gpx or .kml files to [email protected] Finally, we know that there was excitement with the news spreading that River’s phone turned on. Unfortunately, this has been confirmed to have been someone calling his cellphone and the call going to voicemail. It is amazing to see the community come together with such effort during this challenging time. Skalulmecw Political Kukwpi7 Dean Nelson

Message from: Kúkwpi7 Skalúlmecw. New COVID-19 health order restricts gatherings in private homes restricted, after BC announces record new cases Kukwpi7 Skalulmecw asks for the community to comply with current safety protocols.... After a record 817 new cases of COVID-19 were reported the weekend of October 16 -19, Dr. Bonnie Henry released a new Health Order restricted the size of gatherings and announcing that masks now an "expectation" in all public places. The number of new cases over the three days is the highest BC has experienced since the onset of the pandemic. "This is a bit of a sobering weekend for us," Dr. Henry said in her address. The new provincial health order restricts gatherings in private homes to no more than immediate household members and a "safe six" additional people. Dr. Henry acknowledged that this might be difficult for people, but was something we all had to do as a community to reduce transmission of the virus. "It's become apparent to health officials that gatherings of fewer than 50 people are not necessarily safe. I encourage all of our people to stick to gatherings consisting of their own family and their 'safe six,' the people in your bubble," says Kúkwpi7 Skalúlmecw Chief Dean Nelson. "While masks are not mandatory, I encourage everyone to wear a mask whenever they are in public." As well, Dr. Henry asked that everyone continue to follow other COVIOD-safety rules such as physical distancing, frequent hand washing and staying home if they are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. To get through our COVID-19 storm, it requires all of us to do our part No exceptions, no workarounds, no trying to get around the very few important rules we have in place, said Dr. Henry. There are currently 2,325 active cases of Covid-19. The total number of people being monitored in BC because of potential exposure to the virus was, as of Monday, 5,077. To date, 13,371 people have had confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province. "I ask everyone to continue to follow the COVID-19 safety protocols, "said Kúkwpi7 Skalúlmecw. "By working together, we can keep our community safe."

TWO Lilwat COMMUNITY MEMBERS MISSING AFTER MUSHROOMING EXPEDITION Leadership thanks community for assisting with the search LILWAT NATION (October 23, 2020) Two Lilwat community members, River Leo and Peter Oleski, are currently missing. The two men left for mushrooming in the Upper Mackenzie Basin on the morning of October 22, 2020. The last time anyone heard from the men was at 2 pm that afternoon. ... When the men failed to return home that evening, RCMP and the Pemberton Search and Rescue were notified, and the Lílwat community led the search effort that extended through the night. The vehicle the men have been travelling in, a red Dodge pick-up, was found in the vicinity of the upper paragliding launch. Myself, Kukpi7 Gelpcal (Cultural Chief Ashley Joseph), council and appointed leadership are grateful for the time that has been invested in searching for River and Peter, said Kukwpi7 Skalulmecw Chief Dean Nelson. Your concern, compassion and participation in the search effort are very much appreciated. This morning, October 23, Kukwpi7 Skalulmecw joined Pemberton Search and Rescue, in the search, which is also being assisted by the RCMP and Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police. At this point base camp, at the entrance to the Mackenzie Forest Service Road, is full, said Kukwpi7 Skalulmecw. I ask that everyone stay home now and let SARS and the Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police continue the search. We will update the community as more information becomes available. It is my deepest hope that River and Peter are safe and that we find them very soon. I ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers. As of 3pm, the two men were still missing. The search is ongoing and urgent, as temperatures in the area are due to plummet into the double digits this weekend.

Howling, 70-100 km/h winds ramp up in B.C., expect power outages Tuesday, October 13th 2020, 7:00 am - These strong winds are likely to leave thousands of British Columbians in the dark, particularly in Vancouver Island. Damaging winds, gusting up to 100 km/h at their strongest, and still strong across more populous areas of the B.C. coasts, will be ramping up Tuesday, putting a big strain on the province's power grids. Meanwhile, snowfall warnings are in effect for some of t...he high mountain passes, with accumulating snow set to make travel difficult. WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS Winds will peak Tuesday afternoon and evening, gusts up to 100 km/h for western Vancouver Island, 70-90 km/h for southern Vancouver Island, 50-70 km/h for Metro Vancouver Moderate-to-high risk of power outages in Vancouver Island 5-15 cm of snow for mountain passes TUESDAY: POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WINDS, POWER OUTAGES POSSIBLE A strong low-pressure system is to blame for the incoming winds, which were already intensifying in the early morning hours of Tuesday. By the afternoon and evening, they will be at peak strength, particularly along western Vancouver Island, where gusts could reach 100 km/h. Those will be the strongest from this system, but the expected peaks won't be too shabby elsewhere: 70-90 km/h for southern Vancouver Island and 50-70 km/h for areas of Metro Vancouver nearest the coast, diminishing further inland Aside from likely causing ferry and flight delays or cancellations, these winds are strong enough to make widespread power outages a real possibility, particularly given most trees still have most of their foliage, and the ground will be somewhat loose from the regular rounds of rain over the past few days. Previous lows of this intensity have knocked tens of thousands of customers off the power grid. Parts of the South Coast are particularly vulnerable to power outages with fall foliage hanging on in early October, Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says
