Liminal Space Therapy 22.12.2020

Anybody else wait 2 hours to see the Canad Inns Christmas lights last night??? We had a great time in a caravan with some of my family. Just enjoying the season the best we can. It’s not perfect and not completely satisfying. No platitudes though- no it’s better than nothing. It all kind of sucks and we’re allowed to be frustrated, sad and lonely. It’s a real tough week. Weeks. Months. Almost year. Exhausted, overwhelmed, scared, sad, angry... are just a few words that come up for me as we lockdown. I’m not sure I believe that we’re in this together anymore but I’ll try my best to be here for you and transition all my work to virtual appointments. Could you please do your best to stay home and not see your friends and family so we can all get to a vaccine alive? I know that’s what I’ll be doing. It can be hard when growth is slow, especially in 2020 when it seems at a stand still for some. Happy 10&10 Winnipeg!! Happily finished my 10k with my super-speedy (nut slowed down a little for me) cheerleader of a partner. Can you please look at my time? If you’re a runner you’ll know it’s a slow time and I’m SO proud of it. I want to say that if you are like me and have felt really intimidated by starting a sport, I get it. . I joined a group last fall to train for a half marathon. My first night in group we all introduced ourselves and all but 4 people in the room h...ad run multiples half marathons (I’m talking like 20 each) and most had done a full. I had done a 10k about 6 years ago. I had spent about a month preparing for the clinic by getting myself into good enough shape to run a 5k non-stop. Still slow but non-stop. So I was actually feeling a little proud of myself. So anyway, we set off on our group run for the evening and I don’t know anyone so I start off in the group but running alone... and slowly, people are passing me. And then I’m at the back of the pack and then with each turn or bend people get further and Reuther ahead until I get to a corner where I actually don’t know which direction to go. I can’t see anyone, they’re too far ahead. And I’m just standing at this corner whipping my head one way and another thinking how stupid I feel for thinking I could do this. I let the speed of others, the fitness of others, the experience of others make me feel worthless, stupid, fat, slow, pathetic. A few months went by and I ran a half marathon. I ran it alone at my own pace with a great big smile. I love my slow pace, I love my atypical running body, I love the powerful feeling I get when I crush a 10k in an hour and 45 minutes!!! . A new leaf on our elephant ear plant. Not sure why I get so excited about new leaves on this one but I just reported it and the first leaf after reporting was enormous so I’m very excited to meet the new one. I also know that this plant has really been beaten up by us- sitting on leaves by accident, a toddler ripping some up, etc. And I always appreciate the resilience I see in plants- even without a green thumb most of them survive! Like me. I hope I don’t have to explain too much but seriously, going to therapy is one of the most courageous things we will ever do in our lives. Therapy is vulnerable and suggests that you are pursuing change in your life. Vulnerability is courageous- don’t believe me? Just ask @brenebrown . She’s been studying it for over a decade. Understandably, we crave the connection of being understood when someone else gets it. Like how I am in search of eye contact with other moms when I talk about my weekend of frustrating potty training. It’s comforting. This is an important part of feeling understood. However, there are other ways. Most therapists have the experience, education and training to understand the problem, hopefully better than your friend who shares the difficult experience because of one little... thing I keep coming back to: EMPATHY. Ever tried to talk to a friend, partner or family member about a problem?? Let me guess what they said: 1. They were totally in your side and didn’t challenge you to see the situation from a different perspective. 2. Interrupted you to talk about their own problem. 3. Started a sentence with At least... 4. Tried to put a silver lining on your pain. ... 5. Stared at their phone the whole time and when you stopped talking said yeah. 6. Advised you to do something that would make your life a lot harder. The problem with people who know and love you is that they’re over invested and too emotionally involved. Yes, your therapist gets involved and feels emotionally connected AND they’re trained to provide perspectives that you aren’t able to access on your own. Therapists are trained to provide EMPATHY. Empathy is life changing, as my partner says, there is no sentence more healing than for someone to say me too. That is empathy. That is healing.
