Feeling so inspired from today's keynote at @theportraitmasters conference by Victoria BC's own Trista Nicole Smith @reclamationdesigncompany. Her talk had me reeling with emotion as I recounted my own journey and how I still get in my own way of being the person, photographer and change maker I know in my heart I am, and can be. Everything she said resonated and I'm sure I could quote a million gems from her talk but this one really stood out for me in particular. It's tr...ue both in the positive and negative; what you believe about yourself on the inside is reflected on the outside. It's time to truly believe that as Trista says 'the power to create the life we want rests within us, always' and that we don't have to ask permission to be who we are. It's time that we enjoy the entire journey in the life that we create for ourselves as there is only forward. See more

I’ve been thinking a lot about forgiveness lately and am thankful for the reminder from the movie ‘It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood’ when Mister Rogers poses the question Do you know what it means to forgive. His answer is so simple and common sense. He says It's a decision we make to release a person from the feelings of anger we have at them. It's strange, but sometimes it's hardest of all to forgive someone we love." I know this first hand but also know that it... only takes two words by all involved to make things better: ‘I’m sorry’. Saying you’re sorry can be hard but it doesn’t always mean admitting to wrong doing; it can be saying you’re sorry for your part, sorry for the way whatever happened or how it made the other person feel, or simply that you’re sorry and that your relationship is worth way more than holding on to the anger and upset you have with them. Forgiveness and saying you’re sorry is no doubt hard to do but they go hand in hand when you care deeply about the people you love. Just my two cents!! See more

Love...been thinking about it a lot lately. How does one feel truly loved and give love freely and meaningfully? Age old questions I know but all the more fascinating. I see love existing in a myriad of and sometimes unexpected ways; in our everyday expressions...the way we communicate, share, the words we choose and how we say them, body language, what we do and the actions we take. The list goes on. So fascinating and captivating and most often an end goal in every portrait I take to find that spark, that emotion, that love within that makes the heart sing and the soul emerge and open the door for connection.

This is Sammy, a real gentle beauty who we’ve gotten to know from our regular walks around the neighbourhood. It seems everyone has a dog around here, which is no surprise with so many great places to walk and play. I’m. It sure what kind of dog she is and although she is getting on in years, she is ever so playful and photographs so well don’t you think? I adore animals - sometimes more than people lol - and feel such joy and personal reward when I can capture their sweet souls and personalities on camera.

What brings you joy? For me, one of the things is living by the sea. I grew up with it and can’t imagine not living by it. Vancouver Island and the west coast is pretty awesome I have to say! Hope you’re having a joyful Sunday evening!

‘Uncertainty in uncertain times.’ No doubt a sentiment on all our minds as the new school year draws near, the US election looms and the hope of a vaccine for Covid becomes more real. I came across this quote by award winning novelist Margaret Drabble, When nothing is certain, everything is possible. The more I think about it the more it becomes truth, that is, if you believe it. Humanity as a whole has been through much worse and with that we must shift our perspective and make this our collective truth and act accordingly. It really is empowering when you can stand with conviction for the inherent wisdom of humanity and all life on our planet and say anything is possible if we will it so. What do you believe is possible?

While the world is humming along in its current state it’s hard not to feel the effects both emotionally and psychologically and why perspective is more important and ever. Happy to say that I’m choosing to focus on focus and joy and living life more on purpose. How about you?

Crazy beautiful sunset last night.

Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be; embrace who you are. Wise words by Brene Brown but I’m pretty sure if our furry friends could talk they’d tell us the same thing.

Sometimes you just gotta get in front of the lens to see what it feels like. This is a blast from the past when I had some fun fashion photos taken by my friend and fab photographer Paige Birne. We added the cool swirl effect to the original photo and its turned into one of my favourite shoots of myself to date. As a working photographer of over 15 years now, I know how important it is to exist in photos and appreciate ourselves as we are and not how we wish ourselves to be. Not an easy task for some but having photos taken on a regular basis, perhaps for a special milestone or just because, give yourself this gift because before we know it ten years get behind you and you wish you'd captured that time in your life to look back upon and cherish. Believe me!

We’ve been busy over here getting my home studio all spruced up and ready for my clients...my lovely husband graciously repainted the studio while I prepared some of my favourite and signature images for my new canvas wall gallery, as well as ordered some new frames that will house more favourite images and line the walls of the stairwell there. What do you think of the layout?

Always loved my dad’s quirky sense of humour beneath his so called reserved exterior. Today is what would have been his 87th birthday. I’m pretty sure he’s looking down wishing he could’ve stayed to experience this quirky time with us.

Dreaming of Mexico on this lazy and rainy Saturday morning and this beautiful wonder of nature. Some of my favourite memories are from exploring Xcaret Park and walking among the butterflies...anyone know what kind of butterfly this is?
