I love spring. I love the freshness of it. I love watching and waiting for flowers and other plants to emerge from their slumber.... I love that the weather is warmer. I also love the idea of a fresh, new beginning! Many of us have the best plans for our health, but somewhere along the line, these plans fall short. Maybe your diet hasn't been the best? Maybe you stopped taking your supplements? Maybe the exercise program you were so into a few months back isn't happening? We can feel disappointed when don't meet our health goals. But this is no reason to stop yourself from working towards them!! Spring is an amazing time to reassess what your health goals are and start to make concrete plans and efforts to achieve them. Things feel new again, and so too can your health goals. So make an appointment with myself. I can help you make sense of your health, and get you on a new path that will have you feeling like spring has sprung . So let's talk hemp!! Yes, THAT Hemp!! Hemp seeds come from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, which is a variety similar to the marijuana plant but very different in terms of the compounds it contains.... If you're feeling concerned about getting THC or CBD (the medicinal compounds found in marijuana) in your hemp seeds, not to worry. Hemp seeds don’t naturally contain THC or CBD. Hemp seeds have a hard outer shell and a soft inside, which is known as the hemp heart. The seeds can be pressed to create hemp seed oil or ground up and mixed with water to create hemp milk. Hemp seeds and hemp hearts are a good source of plant-based protien. They pack 10 grams of protein and nine essential amino acids in just three tablespoons of seeds. Hemp hearts also contain many vitamins and nutrients including potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. And, not to forget, they also contain 30 percent healthy fat! I love to sprinkle hemp hearts on just about everything! They are great in salads, yogurt, smoothies, and even on roasted veggies and pasta! Give them a go and see how your diet can benefit from adding these awesome and versatile seeds! Yours in health! Hold onto something stable, because I'm about to tell you something amazing... Did you know you can eat pumpkin seed anytime of the year? I know, who knew!!... Seriously though, raw pumpkin seeds are amazing! Pumpkin seeds may be small, but they are packed full of awesome nutrients. Eating only a small amount of them can provide you with a substantial quantity of healthy fats, magnesium and zinc. They are also high in antioxidants, which can help to prevent against the effects of free radical damage. They have a great crunch and can be added to so many different foods, like oatmeal, yogurt, pasta, salads, or eaten all on their own! Food really is the best place to start when it comes to taking charge of your health. Sometimes we have to take foods out of your diet. But sometimes we get to add things in! Give pumpkin seeds a go during a month outside of October and see what they can offer you! As always, not all foods are beneficial for everyone. Talk to your Naturopathic Doctor about whether certain changes to your diet are right for you. Maybe some of you saw my recent post with my awesome new star shaped therapy cups! Maybe some of you were wondering "what the heck are those used for?" We'll friends, let me enlighten you today!... Cupping therapy is a lesser known Oriental medicine that is based around the same principals as Acupuncture. This therapy involves placing small jars or cups on specific areas of the body and appling suction on the underlying tissues. This draws the skin and muscle tissue into the cup. From an Eastern medical perspective this tissue therapy helps to treat certain conditions by moving and dispersing Qi, as well breaking up stagnation. From a Western medical perspective, cupping can be an excellent "inverse" massage, helping to reduce muscle pain. Cupping is an excellent physical therapy that may be a great addition to your treatment plan. There are some side effects that can occur with this treatment, so be sure to talk to your Naturopathic Doctor about whether this therapy is right for you. If you have questions or concerns about cupping therapy please don't hesitate to ask, I'd love to hear from you! Yours In Health! Dr. Linda Shih, ND

This is a quote by Abraham Lincoln and it really highlights the inspiration for our New Years resolutions. Our futures are not set in stone, but are malleable by our actions. We decide our paths and choices which guide what our year will look like.... Not everything is in our control, but if we can make positive changes, it's important to strive for those things. The four habits associates with successful resolutions are ones that can create happiness for yourself! Practicing self liberation. Rewarding yourself for ongoing success. Avoiding temptation. Engaging in positive thinking. For more on these habits check out this great article by Vox Media, which is also listed on my Facebook page. https://www.theatlantic.com//new-years-resolutions/617439/ I hope you have a fantastic and happy 2021! There are so many different resolutions that we can make to get our year off to the right start. We all have our own goals and finish lines to reach, but if you ask me, there is one resolution that I think may make a big difference to your health. Drink more water!... Yes, it's as simple as that! You'd be amazed at what drinking more water can do for you!Drinking adequate amounts of this important fluid is one of the best things you can do for your health. Drinking water affects many areas of our health, including: Digestive system Cognitive function Body composition Skin function We've all heard of these benefits...but have you ever really tried to get more H20? Amounts of water needed can differ for people based on lifestyle. Talk to your Naturopathic Doctor about setting yourself a reasonable water drinking goal and see how you feel. Acupuncture is really my go to treatment for so many different concerns. That being said, there are 3 different conditions that I find myself using this important treatment modality with most often. 1. Infertility... 2. Pain management 3. Stress People experience these above concerns for many different reasons. The reasons why you may be dealing with stress, pain, or infertility will be totally individual to you. As a Naturopathic Doctor I am always attuned to what the specific nature of your health concerns are. And this is the reason why acupuncture can be such a wonderful treatment modality. Acupuncture, while based on a certain set of structured needle points, can be modified to your specific concerns. This flexibility allows me to take into account YOUR health needs so that we can address the concerns most important to you. To find out more about these health concerns, or about how Acupuncture might be able to help you, visit our website, and book an appointment to get started. www.spinestretchstudio.com Make this 2021 about getting healthy and happy. We are less than week away from 2021...can I get a Whoop Whoop! This is the year you're going to take your health seriously, I just know it! After all, we're not getting any younger! Hormone health is such an important aspect to your overall health. Making sure your body is processing hormones adequately could be what helps you have a happy new year this 2021.... Our hormones are processed by our liver and eliminated via the colon. Digestive problems, such as constipation, may impair the elimination of hormones and result in imbalances, such as estrogen dominance. Ensuring proper waste elimination is one of the keys to getting healthy. It's time to come and see me to talk about ways to get your body working in tip top shape and say goodbye to symptoms of PMS and estrogen dominance. Getting into a new routine, or working towards a resolution, can be daunting. Sometimes it might feel like you're not sure where to start. If this is the case, then start small. Try picking one small behavior that you can commit to. ... By keeping things simple and achievable you can get closer to your goals. Maybe you want to be healthier this year? Try taking one supplement everyday for 3 weeks. Floss your teeth Drink at least 2 L of water daily Commit to taking 2 minutes daily to set your intentions for the day. It takes time to make new behaviors becomes habits. Start small and build yourself up to greater achievements. You'll be amazed at what these small behaviors will be become if you can just stick with them. Yours in health! This is an interesting topic that I think is often under-discussed. Estrogen dominance happens when there is too much of the hormone estrogen in the body, whether in general or due to an imbalance with progesterone. When we have excess estrogen there are a number of symptoms that can happen, such as:... heavy periods bloating (water retention) breast swelling and tenderness premenstrual headaches premenstrual mood swings weight gain abdomen, hips and thighs cervical dysplasia gallstones increased blood clotting slowed metabolism There are many reasons why we may develop estrogen dominance. Check out my future posts this month to learn more about this concern, and ways to improve it. Yours in health! No, it wasn't this bowl of oatmeal! I had a glorious doughnut! Yes, a Naturopathic Doctor had a doughnut!... Believe it or not I don't always eat as well as I know I should...and you know what? That is OKAY! It is really important to eat well. That being said it can be hard to always eat healthy, not to mention expensive, and sometimes boring! That's why I like to follow the 80/20 rule. I do my best to eat healthy 80% of the time. And the other 20%..well, sometimes only a doughnut will suffice! Eating well is for the long haul, and if you don't give yourself permission for the inevitable piece of cake, or bowl of chips, it can be too difficult for most of us to keep on track. So remember this holiday season to give yourself a little break...but do keep things in moderation Sometimes, I even eat pizza! Fiber!....it's what you're probably missing from your diet. Whether soluble and insoluble, we need fiber to keep our bodies working in top notch order. Getting enough fiber helps our bodies to:... Eliminate waste Control blood sugar Maintain healthy levels of cholesterol Helps us feel full Adding more fiber slowly into your diet can get you on the road to greater wellness. Women should try to eat at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day, while men should aim for 30 to 38 grams a day. Congrats, you've reached your goal. What a journey! But now what? What do you do once you reach your goals?... It can feel amazing when we achieve what we set out to do. It can feel a little destabilizing, however, when these goals are reached and we no longer are striving for that finish line. Fear not! There is still much to do. You may just need to reformulate these goals for greater achievement. Give these few steps a try: 1. Reset the goal post: No reason why you can't see if you can take your goal a little further! You know you can do it! 2. Set a new goal: Try something new and keep it interesting. 3. Take a break: Listen to your mind and body. If you're feeling tired and in need of rest, take a time out. 4. Create a maintenance plan: Maybe you're happy with your achievements. It might be time to just figure out how to keep up with these changes. 5. Celebrate! Don't forget to to take a moment to reflect on what you've achieved. It feels pretty good doesn't it! Keep moving toward your goals, no matter where on your journey you are. We all want to achieve our goals. Sometimes that is easier said than done. While we often think of habits as things that we do that are not good for us, there are habits that are beneficial.... For instance, drinking water or making our bed first thing in the morning are habits that can improve your well-being. To help achieve our goals we can develop good habits to get us to the finish line. Purported by numerous TED talks, the following good habits might be in your best interest. Give them a shot and see where they take you. 1. Define your fears, not your goals. Try to understand what is holding you back from achieving your goals. Make it a habit to look further at your motivations. 2. Banish the word fine. If things for you are not really fine, stop saying it is good enough. Develop the habit to be honest with yourself and work towards greatness instead of just being fine. 3. Approach obstacles with curiosity. The challenges that we face in life will not always be fun. Often, however, there is something I learn. A habit of curiosity to our daily life can be the difference between the humdrum and achieving our goals. 4. Embrace your accomplishments. Reaching our goals can be difficult. Sometimes we have near-wins. While these may not be goal achievement, it is still a win. Think of all you've learned along the way...and now you're even closer to your destination! It isn't always easy to keep on task, but there are a few tips I can give you to stay on the straight and narrow Aim for the stars, but stay on the ground: In other words, set goals that you want to achieve, and are challenging...but not unachievable.... Happy Saturday Everyone! To continue our journey his month in talking about Reproductive Health, today I'd like to talk a little about Fibroids. Like PCOS, which we spoke about earlier this week, fibroids are a very common concerns or many women.... Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. These growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue, and vary in size. They're sometimes known as uterine myomas or leiomyomas. Many women are unaware they have fibroids because they do not have any symptoms. Some symptoms may include Heavy and/or painful periods Lower back pain Constipation Abdominal pain Discomfort during sex There are different ways to approach the treatment of fibroids. As a Naturopathic Doctor, my goal is to always understand the reason why you may have developed a fibroid to begin with, along with treating the symptoms of them. For more information on fibroids, or any questions about your reproductive health, please visit our website, www.spinestretchstudio.com to see about booking an appointment. I look forward to meeting with you soon! Dr. Linda Shih, ND

Happy Tuesday! Today I'd like to talk a little about a very common condition in women known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, aka PCOS. There are a number of symptoms that are often present with a diagnosis of PCOS, such as:... Insulin insensitivity Male pattern hair growth Infertility Failure to ovulate Unwanted weight gain Cystic ovaries This being said, PCOS is rather a sneaky condition, with many of it's symptoms exiting on a spectrum. While some women may have all the tell tale signs, others may have only a few. For some women it is not until they are trying to become pregnant that they discover that they have an issue with PCOS! No matter the presentation, if you feel like there is something wrong, and you think it might be PCOS, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider. There are laboratory tests that can help define what is going on and many different treatment strategies that may be able to help your symptoms. Hormonal and reproductive health is one area of medicine where Naturopathic Doctors really make a difference. I'd love to meet with you to talk more about how I might help with you get and be well. I'll leave it to you to have a listen and decipher what the song is all about. That being said, I believe the release of this song is a push forward in the right direction into the conversation around sexual and reproductive health, especially for women.... What is normal and not normal with our reproductive system can sometimes be a mystery. Whether this is due to poor sexual education, the shame that often surrounds conversations about reproductive organs, or a lack of focus on women's health, Not knowing about the nuances of our bodies can leave us in the dark. As a Naturopathic Doctor I always emphasize my role as teacher. Helping client's understand their bodies is of the utmost importance, especially when it comes to your health. There is no question that is TMI, and there is definately very little I have not heard before. Please, always feel free to ask questions about your reproductive system that you may be unsure, or concerned about. I am always here to help. I don't know about you, but lately I'm feeling as though stress is catching up with me! Between reopening my office, the sweltering heat outside, and not to mention the prolonged outlook of the COVID 19 pandemic, I feel as though my ability to cope has been dragged to the limit. I know we're all in this for the long haul, but sometime I feel totally stretched! And that's the problem with stress, isn't it? In the short term our bodies are adept at dealing with stress, by re...leasing cortisol, enabling the body to deal with what's infront of us in the here and now. Over time, however, our stress responses can become overwhelmed, and unable to cope in the same way. When this happens our health can suffer, including the health of our reproductive system. It has been demonstrated that too much negative stress can impair our reproductive system by: Increasing the severity of PMS symptoms Impairing a womans ability to conceive, the health of her pregnancy, and her postpartum adjustment. Altering the menstrual cycle. Your periods may becomes absent or irregular, and may be more painful, with changes in the length of cycles. Exacerbating symptoms of reproductive conditions, such as Herpes Simplex Virus or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. There are different strategies to help us cope better with marathon stress, many of which I often recommend in my ND practice. Be sure to visit our website at www.spinestretchstudio.com for more information and to book an appointment to get your stress in check. So it may seem odd to talk about the liver when it comes to our reproductive system, but give me a chance here. Our liver is our body's main detoxification organ, responsible for turning what you eat and drink into energy and nutrients your body can use. It also removes harmful substances from your blood. Hormones and the presence of certain toxins such as BPH, pesticides, alcohol, and medications can all play a role in the health of the reproductive system and pregnancy. If... these substances are not properly metabolized by the liver it may have a negative effect on your reproductive system. Beyond reproductive concerns, signs of an overloaded liver can include fatigue, digestive issues, skin problems, and headaches. There are many different ways to support your liver and your body's natural detoxification processes, such as: Eating a healthy, well balanced diet of lean protein, fiber rich fruits and veggies, and healthy fats. Reducing or eliminating your intake of alcohol. Incorporating certain botanical medicines, such as Milk Thistle and Curcumin, into your daily routine, which can help to support the liver's detoxification processes. Be sure to talk to your Naturopathic Doctor before beginning any supplement to be sure it is right for you. So go forth and be good to your liver! It's been hot and humid but I still love getting outside. A walk in nature is not only cooler than the temps in the city, but also good for your health. Studies tell us that getting out into nature not only makes us feel better emotionally but can also reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and even reduce mortality!... So grab your water bottle and hit the trail. Embrace he summer before it's gone!

It's sweltering hot out there and definately feels like summer! Getting outside is a great option to beating the heat, and staying COVID free...but remember to play safe out there! Here are some simple tips to keeping your summer safe! Be sure to follow social distancing practices even outdoors. Wearing a mask in public spaces may help to prevent COVID exposure to you and others around you. Be sun smart! Getting some sun exposure can up your levels of vitamin D, but limit... it to no more than 15 minutes. Use mineral based sunscreens, shade, hats, and loose clothing to keep your skin protected. If hiking outside in wooded areas be sure to dress appropriately to protect against bugs like mosquitos and tics. Long pants and sleeves can help protect you and always do a tic check to prevent against Lyme disease. I hope you have an awesome and safe summer this year! #lindashihnd #spinestretchstudio #summervibes #healthysummer #sunsmart #gettingoutside #covid19safety #socialdistance

Greetings, I hope you are all doing well despite this unprecedented world event. In the interest of public safety, and given the declaration of a state of emergency in Ontario, the College of Naturopaths has strongly recommended that all non-essential in-person naturopathic treatments be suspended, and I will abide by this recommendation until further notice. That unfortunately means that I will not be available to provide in office procedures such as: acupuncture, cupping, ...soft tissue work, physical exams, injections, therapeutic laser and the like. That being said, I will be available for telemedicine (phone or online) appointments and filling of supplement prescriptions and refills. If you are on bioidentical hormones and need a refill, let me know and I can also call in your prescriptions at the pharmacy. For those of you who have appointments in the coming weeks, I will be contacting you directly to figure out how we should proceed. Changes are happening quickly, so I am sure there will be some e-mails to follow. Please review the recent Health Canada recommendations on social distancing and self-isolation. When using these guidelines, please err on the side of caution (meaning, if in doubt, please self-isolate). Additionally, if you have access to a thermometer, it may be a good idea to get into the habit of daily temperature monitoring (of course, if you only have one, do not share it with your family members without proper disinfection methods). Let us all do our part in preventing the spread of Covid-19. If you need to contact me for any reason, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail at [email protected]. Please stay safe!
