GABA is one of our main inhibitory neurotransmitters. It’s calming. It tells our brain to relax, which tells our body to calm the heck down. As a supplement, this one is interesting since there’s no solid evidence to show that GABA can get from the digestion into your brain. Yet when people take it, they feel calmer and their bodies tend to relax. The thought is that it calms the nervous system by acting on the gut’s nervous system. Yes, your gut has it’s... own nervous system. The effect of a GABA supplement is very short-lived so it’s definitely more of a bandaid than a long-term solution. But in these crazy times, bandaids can just help to push us through! Wellness Wednesday Now that we’re all dealing with an excess of mini chocolate bars, let’s chat about blood sugar. The basics: we eat a mini kitkat (or insert your vice here) and that sugar hits our blood stream and our insulin comes up. This tells the cells to take in the sugar to use it for energy. Since our cells will only take in what they need, any excess will get put in the pantry of your fat cells. This is how kitkats become junk in the trunk. There are a few di...etary tricks to slow this rise of insulin and blood sugar, to prevent everything from shunting to the pantry at once. When this slows down, more cells are able to use the sugar for energy. 1Fibre - check out the nutrition label when you’re looking at cereals, snacks, etc. Under carbohydrates, it will say sugar and fibre. Make sure these are pretty even, or there’s more fibre than sugar. 2Fat - healthy fats will keep blood sugar stable by providing a very slow-release energy, leading to your cells being fed over a longer period of time, leading to less hanger. 3Portions - yes, I know mini kitkats are so tiny. Yes, I know it’s easy to eat more than 8 (no judgement; I’ve done it). Have one or two, then have some nuts and seeds. This will help manage your tastebuds’ cravings and help to mitigate the inevitable crash. #drselfnd #naturopath #naturopathicdoctor #acupuncture #facialacupuncture #wellnesscentre #whitbywellness #durhamwellness #whitby #oshawa #durham #durhamnaturopath #whitbynaturopath #health #heatlhyliving #2020goals #greenspa #greenbeauty #cleanspa #cleanbeauty #organic #vegan #supplements #wellnesswednesday #supplementspotlight #brooklinmoms #selfcare

Foodie Tuesday Good! Eggs are excellent protein sources and a great source of several vitamins. The yolk gets a bad reputation for it’s cholesterol content, but it’s actually quite a nutrient powerhouse. It’s a great source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as several B-vitamins. It also contains choline, which helps to emulsify the fat and break the yolk down in the diet. Several studies have since debunked the myth that eating eggs has negative effects on... your cholesterol levels - it doesn’t seem to have any effect since we inherently can make cholesterol. The fatty acids contained in the yolk, however, are highly dependent on the chickens’ diet. If they’re fed crap, they make crappy eggs. Shocking, I know. If I’m fed crap, I make crappy things, too. Eggs are one of the more common triggers for eczema, so if you’re sensitive, obviously avoid. Choose eggs that are free range with exposure to natural diets and sunlight. The healthier the chicken, the healthier the egg, the healthier you. #drselfnd #naturopath #naturopathicdoctor #acupuncture #facialacupuncture #wellnesscentre #whitbywellness #durhamwellness #whitby #oshawa #durham #durhamnaturopath #whitbynaturopath #health #heatlhyliving #eggs #greenbeauty #tastytuesday #cleanbeauty #organic #vegan #supplements #wellnesswednesday #supplementspotlight #brooklinmoms #selfcare See more
