Lisa Dominato, Vancouver City Councillor 30.04.2021

Councillor Lisa Dominato Joins fellow Greek Canadians in Vancouver Convoy March 25th 2021 marks the 200th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution the revolution t...hat freed the Greeks from the tyrannic grip of the Ottoman Empire, the revolution that launched the ideal of Liberty across Europe. It started in Greece, but spread west. The idea of a nation state, the idea of a constitution, the notion of liberty it all began 200 years ago today with the Greek Revolution. What should have been a worldwide celebration is hampered by necessary COVID restrictions. All around the world, Greek communities have found ways to honour the date. Many countries lit their national monuments in blue overnight, including the Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal, the White House, Niagara Falls, the Roman Coliseum, and even Vancouver’s City Hall. Unable to gather for festive celebrations, the Greeks of Vancouver will holding a drive-by to salute the numerous Greek flags erected across Vancouver to mark the occasion. All participants will remain in their cars. The convoy will leave the St.Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Boundary at 11am and weave through the City, past all the flags, and arrive at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church on Arbutus. City of Vancouver Councillor will join the convoy, not only as an elected official, but also as a fellow Greek. Her surname may be Italian, but she carries Greek blood in her as well. Councillor Dominato’s Great Grandfather James (Dimitri) Postulo settled in Prince Rupert in 1916, along with his wife Constance. The couple raised seven children, of which the sixth was named Anne. Anne married an Italian by the name of Severino Dominato. Councillor Dominato is their granddaughter. Anne Dominato’s death certificate states that her parents were both born in Grevena, Greece. My Grandmother Anne’s siblings were very active business people in Prince Rupert, operating hotels, apartments, and restaurants. Three of her sisters had a famous restaurant called The Three Sisters Café, shares Councillor Dominato. Her eldest sister, Martha, worked at Vancouver’s infamous Peter Pan Café. My Grandmother faced an untimely death in her early 30s, and my grandfather remarried a couple of times, having outlived his wives. Anne was his true love and he was buried by her side when he passed away. This is but a small introduction to this wonderful real-life B.C. historical saga filled with romance, tragedy, and many descendants who identify as Canadians, with Greek Canadian roots. If you see a convoy of cars waving Greek flags as it weaves throughout Vancouver today, wave at the proud people whose history stems from a brave revolution fought on the grounds of Freedom or Death 200 years ago on the Mediterranean land of Greece. -- by Rania. Vancouver Council is unanimous in calling on the Federal government for access to the covid wage subsidy. PNE/Playland is the only Fair in the country not able to access this critical funding due to its ownership structure.
