What are the benefits of wearing GOLD FILLED chain versus gold plated? MORE GOLD Did you know that gold filled chains are made with 5% solid gold that is heat bonded over a high quality metal, usually jewellers brass? In comparison, gold plated chains are made with only .05% sold gold (that’s 100% less gold than gold filled!)... HYPOALLERGENIC Because solid gold in gold filled jewelry is mechanically bonded to the base metal underneath, the solid gold will not wear off. This makes gold filled an excellent choice if you are allergic to lower quality metals. Conversely, gold plated jewelry contains base metal which is simply dipped in a solution that contains gold, and the bond is much less strong. Once the thin outer layer of gold in plated jewelry begins to wear off, the base metal underneath can begin to irritate sensitive skin. TARNISH RESISTANT Because gold filled chains are made of a thick heat bonded external layer of solid gold, the gold will not wear off. The thin gold coating on gold plated chains, however, can easily begin to rub off, leading to tarnishing. When we sweat while wearing gold plated chains, the sweat can speed up the processing of tarnishing plated metal. LONGEVITY Gold filled chains are known to retain their quality for their lifetime (up to 10 years) and will not tarnish or turn colour when treated with care. SUSTAINABILITY & VALUE Because of their high quality, you won’t need to replace your gold filled chain, which means less environmental waste and you will also save the extra expense of buying a new chain. While plated gold tends to be lower in price, you’ll likely need to replace your gold plated chain within 6 months and dispose of your old one. Over time, you can end up spending more and creating unnecessary waste when buying plated gold. All Lisa Maxwell chains are 14K gold filled.
