Is your team efficient or effective ? Here’s how to tell the difference: When a team is being efficient they’re: focused on fast paced productivity ... encouraging individual work vs. collaborative efforts doing something for speed’s sake - which can result in cutting corners This can result in a loss of value and quality in the project at hand. You’re getting something done quicker in the short term while sacrificing quality in the long term. On the flip side, when a team is being effective they’re: taking time to work things out managing tasks together are on the same page in terms of tasks and responsibilities and how each affects the team and project as a whole Being effective means that a project may take longer to achieve in the short term, but it will yield a greater quality of work and increased capability in the long run. Aim to build a team that values effectiveness over efficiency - it’s truly the secret to success #leadershipskills #businesstipsandtricks #businesstipsforsuccess #managertips #careersuccess #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #workingwoman #torontoontario #mississaugacity #oakvilleontario #waterlooregion

Setting and keeping good habits are essential for anyone wanting to be successful in their workplace. But how? If you have ever wondered... Why don’t I do what I say I’m going to do? ... ... or stop smoking or save for retirement or start that side business? Why do I say something is important but never seem to make time for it? The answers to those questions can be found somewhere in these four laws. - James Clear If you want to learn about the habit loop theory, then check out the book Atomic Habits by @jamesclear What was your biggest takeaway from the slides? 5 activities to encourage ally-building conversations in the workplace 1) Five Moments - pair off team members or put them into small groups. Encourage them to share five moments that most defined their lives. They can go into as much or little detail as they like. This can be very helpful in building bridges between employees who think that they may have very little in common. 2) Working Together - ensure the groups you assign in various projects are already diverse in... nature. This allows your employees to work together in a real-world situation and encourages conversation from different perspectives. 3) Ally Bingo - the downloadable bingo cards from betterallies.com is a great resource for team members to individually track their allyship actions. They can check in with themselves and see where they’re hitting the mark, and the card also gives them insight into other actions they could be doing - that might not have been on their radar before - to be an advocate and an ally for others. 4) I am, But I am Not - give each person a piece of paper and have them draw a line down the middle. On one side employees will need to write the words I Am, on the other they will write I am not and in between the words is but. The responses are meant to be the starting point to help encourage open dialogue on stereotypes so that they can be dealt with, and so that employees can gain a deeper understanding of how they came to be developed. 5) Acknowledging Bias - if your team is ready, start a bias jar. The bias jar is used in the same way a cuss jar is used - when someone uses language that invokes a stereotype or is derogatory, they put money in the jar. When this happens, an honest conversation needs to happen about why the language or action is hurtful to those that it was directed to or about. As a leader, how do you foster allyship and inclusion on your team? #leadershipskills #businesstipsandtricks #businesstipsforsuccess #managertips #careeradviceforwomen #careersuccess #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #empoweredwomen #leadershiptips #diversitymatters #equalitynow #equalpayforequalwork #equalopportunity

I wasn't always good at being a leader. In fact, the first time I became a manager I had a trifecta of challenges: 1I was covering maternity leave, so I was just temporary.... 2I was supervising someone who didn’t think I should have been chosen - they had started at the organization the same day I had, they had worked in the department (whereas I was coming from a different department), AND they had also applied for the position 3I had never supervised anyone before! When I started I was under the impression, as many new leaders are, that I had authority and therefore people would do what I said. Boy, was I wrong! But then, I discovered the pivotal secret that changed it all: relationships come first, and in a moment, I changed my trajectory. Because, once I understood how to build accountable, trusting relationships, I had the key to being a successful leader, and things started to click. I understood how to avoid: - wasting energy repeatedly asking my employees to stop doing non-work related tasks. - worrying about whether they were getting their work done and hitting their targets. - holding myself back from stepping into my leadership role fully out of fear that I would be perceived as aggressive. If you’re ready to take action alongside someone who has truly been there, done it, and fallen on their face - you’re in luck. I have 2 spots available for a very special online program I’m hosting in the next 7 days. Sometimes women ask me whether I can really help them break into leadership - let me tell you about Rayna You see, before we started working together, Rayna was struggling with - learning to move through the imposter syndrome she was experiencing... - identifying and taking the steps needed to land her first leadership role - figuring out what her leadership style was She was just like you. But what happened next was truly magical. Because, after consistently implementing the leadership plan we developed together, within only 3 months things started to shift. Not just for Rayna, who ended up landing her first role in leadership. But for me, too. Watching Rayna transform before my eyes was so inspiring, and now I am HOOKED on helping people like Rayna stop doubting themselves and letting imposter syndrome rule their lives, so they can begin feeling confident and inspired to take action on their path towards leadership - because they deserve to! I’m looking for my Raynas of the future right now. Let’s level with the boys here and mend that broken rung. If you’re unaware, this term is in reference to the inequality women face moving into management in comparison to their male counterparts; it impacts everything from promotions to wages. I probably don’t have to tell you - there is inequality in the workforce, even though women take on as much of the workload as their male counterparts. Gender bias creates the Broken Rung.... As women, we need to be our own and each other’s advocates - and be vocal in the workplace to get what we crave; the chance to climb that corporate ladder. Ladies, it is our time to shine in this world! I can’t move up into leadership as a woman. I’m too junior in my career. I’ve never led a team before.... That’s something just for people who have their stuff together. I’m not prepared enough. Deep down, I kind of, sort of don’t believe I deserve it. Ouch, friend. I’m not here to judge - after all, we all have things that hold us back from getting what we want in life, right? But I am here to challenge you. Because, as a Leadership Coach who helps other hard working women climb the corporate ladder and land leadership roles - you might say, I have a few tools up my sleeve that are just the thing for breaking into the leadership track once and for all. I have over 25 years of experience working in corporate at different levels of leadership I meet my clients where they’re at and develop a custom plan tailored to them and their career goals I help support my clients through building the confidence they need to make the big ask and land their promotions! Raise your hand if your performance review ever included one or more of these not so lovely critiques: "You’re too aggressive/confrontational." "You need to be more assertive."... "The way you talk is really bossy and it’s rubbing people the wrong way." After a while it’s easy to begin to think: Am I the problem? Until you look at these studies and stats: An analysis conducted by David Smith in 2018 showed that when it comes to subjective reviews, Managers tend to use more positive words to describe men in performance reviews, and more negative words to describe women - even if the men and women’s performances are the same by objective measures. When it comes to negative attributes, men are most commonly described as arrogant or irresponsible, whereas women are most commonly described as inept, frivolous, scattered, temperamental, panicky, and indecisive. While being arrogant could be considered a character flaw, they can still complete the tasks at hand. While being inept presumes that the person is not qualified and puts them on the chopping block for being laid off or fired. Women leaders often get conflicting feedback by being told that on one hand they’re too bossy or aggressive, but on the other hand that they should be more confident and assertive. There’s no winning. So, the next time that imposter syndrome begins to creep in, take a moment to reflect and realize that it’s probably not you that’s the problem, it’s the broken system that has been perpetuated since basically the dawn of time. #shepersisted #empowerher #femaleleaders #womenmanagers #empoweredwomen #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #womenintech #womeninpolitics #womenwhocode #womeninstem #womeninleadership #womeninfinance #womeninmedia #womeninmarketing #womeninit #womenintheworkplace #womenswave #diversitymatters #femalefuture #equalitynow #equalpayforequalwork #equalopportunity #feminismisequality #equalpay #ladiesgetpaid #femaleceo #workingwoman #intersectionalfeminism #iwd2020 See more

Someone made a sexist remark or joke and now the alarm bells are going off. You want to address it, but you hate conflict. What do you do?!... Well, first, take a deep breath and know that you are equipped with the tools to address this in a healthy way that’s professional and conversational, while simultaneously challenging their bias. (or at least you will be after reading this post ) Our knee jerk reaction is to get on the defense, but a better way to address this is by coming from a neutral place, and asking questions about their bias. Ask questions like this : Can you help me understand why you just said that/why you think that? Where did that come from? Why did you think that’s something you could say right now? This challenges their bias and assumptions by causing them to reflect on their actions and answer to their behaviour. You may get the good old: It’s just a joke reply. In that case, say something like: I found that offensive. Please refrain from making jokes like that in the workplace. This is a professional setting/place of business. If you feel they’d be receptive, it’s good to talk about impact. The person is either going to be apologetic and use it as an opportunity to reflect and learn, or they’re going to get defensive and be a jerk. If they’re not open to dialogue, what you say isn’t going to matter, so that’s when you take the next step and report it to HR. You never know which way addressing a sexist remark is going to go, but you’ll feel better addressing it in the moment - and setting those boundaries right away - rather than spending the next week mulling over the event and wishing you had said something. Addressing it will also help to prevent those situations from repeating in the future. #femaleleaders #womenmanagers #empoweredwomen #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #womenintheworkplace #womenswave #diversitymatters #femalefuture #equalitynow #equalpayforequalwork #equalopportunity #feminismisequality #equalpay #ladiesgetpaid #femaleceo #workingwoman #intersectionalfeminism #womeningovernment #womeninpolitics #womeninstem #womeninleadership #womeninfinance See more

How many times a day do you feel like you landed in your current job position by chance? Or that it was a fluke and you’re waiting for your boss to come in and tell you that this was all a mistake and you’re fired? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. In all the clients I’ve coached I’ve seen a common theme: imposter syndrome. ... And I’ve fallen victim to the imposter syndrome trap too. More times than I can count. We all feel it at one point or another. And having imposter syndrome is not your fault, it’s not a character flaw. Society conditions us to feel this way. Especially in regards to our work performance. Next time you feel those intrusive thoughts coming in, remind yourself that you are smart, you provide value, and you deserve to be there. And if you’re having a hard time seeing the value in you, ask your coworkers what value they see in you. Their answers might surprise you. #shepersisted #iamremarkable #bettertogether #dontbeafraid #becoming #reclaimingmytime #limitingbeliefs #empowerher #impostersyndrome #businesstipsforwomen #leadershipskills #businesstipsandtricks #businesstipsforsuccess #managertips #careeradviceforwomen #careersuccess #femaleleaders #womenmanagers #empoweredwomen #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment #equalopportunity #feminismisequality #equalpay #ladiesgetpaid #femaleceo #workingwoman See more

Are you working from home, bouncing from zoom call to zoom call, day in and day out? Then you’re probably experiencing screen fatigue! It’s no surprise that people are experiencing higher amounts of stress because of the pandemic. ... Companies are cutting corners to save money by laying off people, which in turn is putting more burden on the employees who remain part of the organization. Expecting people to do more work with a less staffed team. You most likely have more work than normal put on your plate, and in order to keep up with the demand you may be filling what would normally be your commute time to work with - you guessed it - more work. Rather than intentionally blocking that time off for yourself. The lines between work and home are blurred because there is no clear hard line of start and stop for the day. But here's the issue: Spending too much time in front of a screen, and not enough time taking care of your physical and mental health is causing detrimental effects on your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Here’s how you can avoid it: 1 Block off time to commute - Block an hour or two off before your start to the work day to take time for YOU. Make a hot breakfast, meditate, spend this time doing something to take care of your mental health and prepare yourself for a productive work day. 2 Set boundaries - give yourself a set amount of hours per day for virtual calls, and communicate those boundaries clearly with those around you. This prevents unnecessary video calls that could have otherwise been an email communication, and helps preserve your energy for more complex issues or work tasks. 3 Take breaks - back to back calls are exhausting. So it’s important that you communicate up front that you may need to bounce from a call 5 minutes early, or that you might be 5 minutes late to your next call because you need to take time to reset, fill your water, use the bathroom, etc. If you don’t set these boundaries for yourself, you’ll burn out very quickly. #businesstipsforwomen #leadershipskills #businesstipsandtricks #businesstipsforsuccess #managertips #careeradvi See more

You may be thinking to yourself: what on earth is a Leadership Coach?! Well, a Leadership Coach is a professional who functions as a thinking partner for leaders or those working on breaking into leadership. The usual name for this kind of coach is Executive Coach, and it’s always been a luxury that executives got to enjoy - sort of like reserved parking, and Friday afternoon golf lunches.... I think executive coaching should be for everyone who wants to grow and develop their leadership skills. The way I see it, the sooner you’re able to focus on developing your leadership, the sooner you are able to be more effective in your current role. Leadership development will also allow you to progress in your career at a quicker rate. Training is great, but sometimes what you need is more individualized. Coaching takes care of that. So what does a leadership coach do? I work with my clients to clarify their desires and design actions that move them toward their goals. We engage in direct, confidential conversations where I bring questions, observations and occasionally advice, so you can find: Greater clarity and goal achievement Improved leadership skills, confidence and presence Enhanced insight and personal growth Greater organizational awareness and ease with navigating change Sound like something you might need?
