FOR SALE Early red seed potatoes. These are my own potatoes which I've grown from seed year after year. No chemicals, no fertiliser (except manure) and no oil to bring them up the road. $5/kg. Limited quantity, what's left from my planting (and eating!). Today and tomorrow morning only.
Just as nature covers the ground with leaves in the fall, so do we. The leaves will somewhat insulate the ground through the winter and provide fertiliser and organic matter for the soil as they decompose. Increasing the organic content of soil will help water retention in our increasingly hot and dry summers. Organic matter also encourages worms...and what comes out of a worm is 7x more fertile than what goes in! Spreading leaves on your garden in the fall is a worthwhile investment.
The principles I'll share tomorrow we learned in Africa. If some of the poorest in the world can grow their own food, I know that we can do it here too! Hope to see you at Seedy Saturday 2017 where I'll present Growing Nature's Way: Simplicity and Sustainability at CNC Quesnel at 11am.
The principles of 'using what we have' (and not thinking that we have to buy everything) and 'minimising waste' are part of the simple and sustainable approach to growing food which I'll outline at Seedy Saturday 2017 at CNC Quesnel on 22 April at 11am. As an example, I recently used what we had and avoided wasting the last few small parsnips from last year. It was good!
