Little Big Sleepers Sleep Consulting 26.02.2021

I must admit, I usually hear this from people who's baby slept well naturally from early on. Trying to figure out how to get your baby sleeping longer at night and have consistent naps can be exhausting and complex. Different advice from well meaning relatives and friends can add to the confusion and frustration while you struggle to function on very little sleep yourself. It isn't common sense for most babies. It can be complicated. And wanting to reach out for he...lp does not mean you have failed some kind of basic parenting test. It means you want the best for your child, and that, is common sense. #sleepmyth #sleeptip #tiredmomclub #sleepscience #newbornsleep #firsttimeparents #firsttimemom #sleepcoach #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama

Where does your baby's sleep space fall on this scale? Ideally, it should be number 10! Yes, that dark! Especially at naptimes and during those early morning hours. Babies aren't born with a fear of the dark, that is something learnt from external factors during toddlerhood. In the meantime, their sleep environment needs to be as dark as possible to help them sleep and avoid unnecessary brain stimulation between sleep cycles. ... If your nursery is too light, start with some blackout blinds (there are lots of easy-to-install options online that don't break the bank). You could also add weather stripping to the nursery door if a lot of light creeps in. It's a good idea to cover up any pesky LED lights on cameras and white noise machines with electrical tape and definitely avoid ceiling light projections. Every little helps when creating the perfect sleep environment! Just make sure anything you use to block out light is securely fastened and has no risk of falling in the crib #sleeptip #tiredmomclub #sleepscience #newbornsleep #firsttimeparents #firsttimemom #sleepcoach #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama

Eeeek! Keeping your baby up during the day to help them sleep at night is an evil myth! It will leave your baby feeling overtired which causes more fussiness, tears and problems falling asleep at bedtime and throughout the night. Check out my earlier post on overtiredness to find out why. #sleepmyrh#firsttimemom #newmomlife #parenthood #firsttimeparents #newborntips #newborn #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #whatdoesthatevenmean #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama #sleeptip #tiredasamother #tiredmomsclub #sleepbetter #sleepcoach

What happens to an overtired baby, and why is it such a problem?? When a baby becomes too tired, their body releases the stress and party hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. With these hormones flooding their system it becomes extremely difficult to wind down and fall asleep. Cue the cranky meltdowns during the day and extra crying at bedtime! ... The presence of these hormones also restrict the release of the sleepy hormone melatonin, not only does this affect how long it takes to fall asleep, it can also cause more disruptions at night, early morning wake ups and short naps. All of these effects contribute to a vicious cycle of overtiredness. Best ways to break the cycle? Stick to age appropriate wake windows Watch for sleepy cues Early bedtimes! If you are stuck in this vicious cycle and need help, reach out to book a free call with me. #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama

Fall time change! Part 3 of a 3 part series - save this post! For the ones that LOVE sleep no matter what! So here is the last approach (if you can call it an approach) - do nothing! ... If you think your kiddo can handle the time change easily then why stress over it? Sure, it might disrupt them a bit for a few days, or it might not. You know your child best. Watch for sleepy cues, stick to the wake times that work for them and hope for best. If you have read all three of these posts you will see I have tailored my advice to different ages and temperaments as much as I can because no child is the same, and therefore, no advice should be the same! I took this photo at 7.20am and was going to post about our struggle with early mornings and how recently they have finally resolved. It was a wonderful, relaxed start to my Monday and I was marveling in the concept that "this too shall pass" and how it applies to many struggles in parenting. It was glorious. And then I had an almighty battle trying to get her in the car seat (and its snowing), and the glorious moment passed. You win some, you lose some. At... least I got to enjoy my coffee this morning though. Anyone else's kiddo hate their car seat?? Or are you battling early morning wakes?? Daily schedule?!?! yeah, hear me out... Don't worry I'm not going to tell you to put your newborn or young baby on a strict "follow-the-clock" schedule. That just wouldn't work. BUT you can use this simple routine to add a little structure to their day and help lay down those solid sleep foundations early on.... wake - eat - play - sleep When they wake, go to a bright room and try to give them a full feed. Getting a full feed at this time instead of right before they sleep will help avoid the eat to sleep association. After the feed, try a little playtime before their nap. Then repeat! #firsttimemom #newmomlife #parenthood #firsttimeparents #newborntips #newborn #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #whatdoesthatevenmean #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama #sleeptip #tiredasamother #tiredmomsclub #sleepbetter #sleepcoach

Fall time change! Part 2 of a 3 part series - save this post! For older babies and toddlers or those who can handle a little disruption to their routine For these kiddos you can try the 'split the difference' approach! You can either do this prior to or after the change. If you do it before, try putting them down 30 minutes later for a couple of nights. If you wait until after the change, put them down 30 minutes earlier for a few nights. This will simply halve the ...time change (hence 'split the difference') and allow them to adjust a little less abruptly. Try to do it for as much of their daily schedule as you can, but again, try not to stress and just do your best! And of course - if you use a toddler clock don't forget to change that too! #daylightsavings #daylightsavingstips #firsttimemom #newmomlife #parenthood #firsttimeparents #newborntips #newborn #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #whatdoesthatevenmean #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama #sleeptip #tiredasamother #tiredmomsclub #sleepbetter #sleepcoach

Fall time change! Part 1 of a 3 part series - save this post to refer back! OK so the Fall time change is coming - landing on Halloween in fact. Thanks 2020!! If you are one of the many parents that dread this time of year (come one, who doesn't dread those early morning wakes ), the next three posts are for you. There are a few different ways to tackle the change and how your child adapts depends on many factors such as their temperament, your work schedules..., daycare nap times and so on. This series of posts will outline 3 common ways you can help your little one cope with the change. For younger babies or those sensitive to schedule changes... For the younger babies, or even older babies and toddlers who love their sleep schedule - an entire hour shift in their day can send them into a tailspin and it can take a while for them to adjust.. They will wake up, be hungry, expect activities and become tired at the same time as their previous routine, which of course leads to early morning wakes, longer wake times, falling asleep at dinner time and overtired meltdowns at nap and bedtime. And that’s just us parents To help ease them into it, a week or so prior to the change (I'd recommend starting tonight if possible), move your little's entire schedule later by 15 minutes every couple of days. So if you usually get them up at 7am, try waiting until 7.15am, if they nap at 12.30pm, move it to 12.45pm and if they go to bed at 7pm, push it to 7.15pm. This goes for mealtimes and regular activities too! By the end of the week their schedule will align closely with the new time, hopefully lessening the impact on the day. I understand this will likely be difficult to do 100% due to work schedules and daycare etc so just try what you can. Don’t stress too much, someone is literally turning back time for no reason at all, we can only do our best with what we are given Any questions? DM me! Happy to answer all questions fired at me. During the first few days, weeks and months of parenthood you will hear a lot about this scary, awful, dreadful monster called the "4 month sleep regression". But what is it? Of all the "regressions" this is the most infamous and feared, (possibly as it is the only true regression , more on that in a future post), but is widely misunderstood. Newborns sleep differently than the rest of us. They only have 2 sleep stages, "active" and "deep", whereas adults have 4... stages. This all begins to change at the 4 month mark as your baby's sleep patterns start morphing to look more like yours. So that means more stages of sleep, which ultimately means more opportunities to wake up in the night as they transition through them. Your baby that used to sleep great at night may suddenly start waking every hour or two and struggle to get back to sleep . The thing is, this "regression" is actually a perfectly healthy part of their development . So instead of fearing the worst, lay down some solid sleep foundations in the early days to prepare your baby for this big change. Yes they will still wake up as they adjust to their new sleep cycles but with the right sleep habits and environment they will adjust much quicker. If your little one is struggling to get through the change and you're feeling lost reach out and perhaps we can try to get them back on track. #4monthsleepregression #sleepscience #sleepregression #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama

Did you know that how you decorate your nursery can affect how your baby sleeps?? If you're anything like me you would have spent hours cruising Pinterest and Insta for the perfect nursery theme. But I had no idea there are certain things you can do that help induce and encourage sleep! And of course certain things to avoid. 4 words to describe the perfect nursery...... DARK - blackout blinds for the windows will stop light leaking in, this will help with naps and avoid early morning wake ups! COOL - babies sleep better at temperatures between 65-70F. A snuggly sleepsack in a cool room is a perfect combo to keep your little one comfortable all night. COMFORTABLE - invest in a good mattress! Most importantly make sure it meets safety guidelines. A link to which can be found in my blog. BORING - yep you guessed it, we want to prepare them for sleep and avoid stimulating their brains so aim for neutral colors. Stay away from music, twinkly light projections and all the cute things we think babies need to sleep. More often than not these items actually keep them awake and lead to more night wakings. Check out my blog for more info on this - link in bio #nurserydecor #tiredasamother #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #whatdoesthatevenmean #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama

There's a lot of judgement in parenting, it sucks, as you all know. One of the things that grinds my gears the most is when parents get judged for wanting/needing more sleep If you and your family are doing well and feel fine with less sleep than what you're used to thats great! Or maybe your baby sleeps well naturally - that's amazing. Sleep training probably isn't at the top of your to do list and that's totally OK! But if you're one of the many, many families that ...are struggling, and wishing things could be different; dreaming about a solid 6 hours of sleep or maybe even more, (heck, maybe even less ), then don't feel shame or guilt. You are not a bad parent. Or weak. Or doing it wrong. You are human. You are adjusting to parenthood. And we are all doing our best for our families Do what you need to do to be the best version of yourself for your family #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #whatdoesthatevenmean #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama #sleeptip #tiredasamother #tiredmomsclub #sleepbetter #sleepcoach

Why does anyone need a sleep consultant when there is so much free/cheap information out there? . OK but let's be honest, who has the time and energy to read all the books/online blogs and choose which method fits your family the best . The books and online blogs are general ideas aimed at the masses. But we know every baby is unique - so how do they know what works for yours?! And what if it doesn't work at all??... . The books and online blogs don't text back. . Why hire me? . Education and training: I have undergone an extensive certification program with hours and hours of sleep specific training. The methods I am trained in do not involve crying it out and have been successful for thousands of families over the years - yours could be next!! . I will ALWAYS ask you to complete a detailed questionnaire about your kiddo and their particular sleep habits so we can tailor the plan to their (and your) needs. Babies might not come with an instruction manual but this is pretty darn close . I TEXT BACK! The support you get during this process is one of the most crucial elements to success. I will not just give you the plan and wish you luck. We will have regular phone calls, emails and if you need to ask any questions I am one text away. You will have me by your side for the duration of the process and we will find success together. If you don't think something is working - we will make changes. . In the words of one of my all time faves "WE CAN DO HARD THINGS" (side note - if you are going to put some energy into reading a book, I highly recommend Glennon Doyle's Untamed Definitely not sleep related but a great read nonetheless) . still want to know more? Book a call with me, email or send me a DM to ask any questions. . . . . #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #sleeptraining #sleeptrainer #infant #infantsleep #babysleep #sleeplikeababy #whatdoesthatevenmean #toddlersleep #babysleeptips #kelownasleepconsultant #littlebigsleepers #tiredmom #tiredmama #sleeptip #tiredasamother #tiredmomsclub #sleepbetter #sleepcoach See more
