Strangles is not to be belittled. Here is advice from the experts. This is how easily it can be transmitted. Rob Holland, DVM, PhD, a private practitioner an...d an equine field veterinarian for Pfizer Animal Health, is working with the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ (AAEP) Infectious Disease Task Force to formulate the most-up-to-date strategies for equine immunization, and he has extensive experience with the dynamics of strangles transmission. Holland concurs, This disease is often spread through oral contact, such as in water, on bits, or lip chains and twitches. Studies have shown that S. equi obtained through the oral route goes right to the tonsillar region quickly. Traub-Dargatz adds, Even a water hose that has been contaminated with the bacteriabecause the hose was touched by people with the bacteria on their hands or the end of the hose was dropped into the bucket of an infected horsecan serve as a source of infection. When the hose is dunked into a bucket as it fills, it then inoculates the water with infectious bacteria. She stresses that while these bacteria survive most efficiently in the horse, in the environment S. equi bacteria persist more effectively in water as compared to soilthe bacteria can survive for three to four weeks in water tanks contaminated by discharges. Although solar radiation and normal soil bacteria play a role in killing off S. equi, how effective they are in killing the bacteria is variable, depending on the surface and the weather conditions, as well as the dose of bacteria present. Riding Off Into The Sunset... It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the closing of Little C’s Ranch at 381 St. Nicholas Road at the end of May 2020. Our final day open to the public is May 24. Over the last 25 years (yes it has been 25 years!) we have had the pleasure of introducing so many people, young and old, to our wonderful world of horses. Not only did we have the opportunity to meet and make strong, long-lasting human friends (my adopted daughters) we got t...o know and fall in love with (mostly) every horse that was entrusted to us! We’ve watched with great pride as our young riders grew up, improving their skills and learning the ins and outs of true horsemanship. It was extremely gratifying to us whenever our ‘barn kids’ opted to stay on or returned to us as barn helpers, instructors and one eventually as our stable manager! We would like to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts, you were truly appreciated. Little C’s Ranch has been an amazing adventure for us, with many challenges, hellos, goodbyes, births, much joy and yes, even heartaches and physical pain. Let’s not forget it has also been lots and lots of hard work! We will surely miss our Annual Fun Day Rodeos, parades, riding lessons, trail rides, Halloween in the Barn and generally ‘horsing around’. In all fairness we will probably not miss mucking out dirty stalls every day, iced-over water barrels in the winter, ice storms that turned the barnyard into a skating rink, rain storms that flooded the indoor arena and ponies that didn’t know their place! And now, the time has come and we must say farewell. Happy trails to all our barn family, students and parents, friends and fellow riders wherever you may be, we are now riding off into the sunset...

A group was created for those who have ever ridden or spent time at Little C's Ranch. This group will help Celina and everyone remember the great memories that were created at the farm. :) Feel free to share photos, stories, favourite memories or horses... :)

As Little C's Ranch closes, I realize how many firsts I had at this barn... From my first ride ever to giving kids their first ride ever as a coach, to meeting... the horse who as a foal I didn't know would become my first horse! As the current barn manager and former 'head coach', I want to thank everyone who entrusted their children and horses in the care of Little C's. Thank you to the lesson horses who learned to take a laugh when we were learning, but were game to put up with the advanced riders as well. Thank you for all the riders I've coached over the past 7 () years... You gave me more patience than you'll ever know! ;) And thank you to Celina and Louis for putting up with me since 2000 ;) Thanks for letting me take in all the project ponies I did and for letting me keep some of them longer than you would've liked. Sad to see my childhood barn closing, but the memories that come with it are forever!

From my beloved DVM: churro "This weekend I euthanized twice as many pets as usual. Owners cannot justify unexpected bills when they have no idea when their ...next paycheck is coming. This weekend I rationed my anesthetic drugs, as they are being diverted to humans on ventilators. I carefully considered each pain injection knowing that opioids will be diverted next. I pulled a sewing needle out of a puppy's throat while wondering what I would have done to save her life without these medications. This weekend I gave tragic news and terminal diagnoses over the phone, over and over again. To owners whose face I had never seen. To familys who sent their pet inside, unable to accompany them because of covid. This weekend I wore reusable mask and cap into surgery to save a dogs life. My disposable caps and masks are being donated and diverted to our human counterparts. She had severe heart disease and was unstable under anesthesia. She survived this surgery, she went home to her mom, in part due to the ventilator that kept her breathing steady. The same ventilator that is earmarked for donation to human hospitals if the need arises. This weekend for the first time in my life, I euthanized pets without stroking their fur, rubbing their ears, or hugging their grieving owners. I stood 6 feet away, wearing a face mask, and giving my injections and condolences from afar. It broke my heart a little more every single time. Your veterinarian isn't on the front line of this war, we are the rear defense. We are being called as volunteers in states where human medical professionals are overwhelmed. We are donating and rationing our medications. We are giving up our ventilators. And we know why. We know that our actions will save human lives, and we won't hesitate at doing what we have to. But don't for a second think that our hearts aren't breaking too. And as this virus spreads, it will get worse. Please, Stay Home. Your pet can't catch covid, but it can hurt them nonetheless."
