Congratulations to this month's shop Steward of the Month Tim Cope! Tim has been a member of LiUNA for 34 Years and has been helping out his sisters and brothers from the beginning. Here's what he had to say when he received his award. I feel privileged to accept this acknowledgment. I have held numerous positions in my 34 year tenure as a proud member of LIUNA Local 1089 and have found being a Shop Steward the most rewarding. I truly believe that by mentoring our new membe...rs to become strong, confident members and future Shop Stewards we as a proud union community will succeed in the betterment for ALL Local 1089 members. September 4, 2020 Labor Day is Our Day On this Labor Day, more than ever we must lay claim to the holiday and all that it stands for: recognition of the working men and women whose sacrifice, struggle and sweat has always carried us from challenge to triumph and moved our nations forward. Through wars, recessions, depressions and pandemics, it has been workers and their unions on the frontlines, and no one has been more willing than the strong, proud and united members of LIU...NA across the U.S. and Canada. LIUNA members have risked their livelihoods and even their lives for justice, honor and strength for all workers, and we continue to do so today. It is LIUNA members and all essential workers who keep our economy afloat in these historic, turbulent times. Labor Day is a time to reflect and commemorate all that has been accomplished. It is LIUNA members who continue to build and maintain North America despite the COVID-19 crisis. It is LIUNA members in the federal and public sector, in healthcare and those in the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, who continue to go to work every day, to serve the needs of our communities, our states, our provinces and our countries. On this day, we must also recommit ourselves to fight against the anti-union, anti-worker forces of evil that threaten both unions and the middle class. We must combat efforts to gut our pay and benefits, push back on so-called right-to-work laws and the dismantling of the Davis Bacon Act. It is also imperative that we protect the right to negotiate in the public and private sector and fight for comprehensive immigration reform. Great News - LiUNA Buffs are here! These must not be worn in place of required PPE. Employers must continue to adhere to their obligation to provide all members with regulated PPE on the job site. They can be worn under your hard hat, over mask, and around head and neck for sun and sweat protection. Please stay cautious and continue to follow all Health Guidelines both on and off the job site. Great News for our Retirees and Seniors!! Prime Minister announces additional support for Canadian seniors The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced a series of additional measures to help Canadian seniors and provide them with greater financial security during COVID-19. ... These measures include: Providing additional financial support of $2.5 billion for a one-time tax-free payment of $300 for seniors eligible for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension, with an additional $200 for seniors eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). o This measure would give a total of $500 to individuals who are eligible to receive both the OAS and the GIS, and will help them cover increased costs caused by COVID-19. Expanding the New Horizons for Seniors Program with an additional investment of $20 million to support organizations that offer community-based projects that reduce isolation, improve the quality of life of seniors, and help them maintain a social support network. The Prime Minister also announced he would be temporarily extending GIS and Allowance payments if seniors’ 2019 income information has not been assessed. In this unprecedented time, these benefits will no doubt provide much needed assistance to some of our seniors!

Supporting workers in a time of crisis: Key steps for governments and employers Canada’s unions are calling on the federal government and its provincial and territorial counterparts to provide immediate income support to workers in self-isolation, quarantine or who are addressing child care needs.... Income support will be critical to minimizing the economic impact of COVID-19. In addition, the Canadian Labour Congress is calling on all governments and employers to take every step necessary to protect the health and well-being of workers, including health care workers who are on the frontlines of this public health emergency. These measures include: 1. Permitting flexible work arrangements, telecommuting, video and teleconferencing, ending non-essential travel, and postponing unnecessary meetings and events. 2. Providing paid sick leave under short-term disability and sick leave plans while maintaining drug coverage. 3. Providing 14 days sick leave for workers under prevailing federal, provincial and territorial labour standards to cover the quarantine period. 4. Waiving any requirement for a doctor’s note to permit sick leave. 5. Prohibiting coronavirus testing as a condition of continued employment. 6. Working with Service Canada to take full advantage of the improved EI Work-Sharing Program to minimize layoffs. 7. Working closely with health and safety committees and unions to provide accurate and timely information to employees about accessing benefits and support. 8. Providing compassionate care and bereavement leave support to employees, as well as mental health counselling and support. Specific to health care workers, employers should, among other things: 9. Provide an adequate supply of appropriate N95 respirators on hand as well as PAPR (for aerosol-generating procedures, e.g. intubation) and other personal protective equipment. 10. Conduct a risk assessment to determine all points of potential entry (and how to restrict them) and other points of potential exposure for workers (e.g. screening, triage, isolation rooms).
