Breastfeeding provides nutrition to children and meets the emotional needs of both children and mothers. While breastfeeding is natural for some, it could be a struggle for others. Providing support for both children and mothers is key to start and sustain breastfeeding. As this Friday marks the end of World Breastfeeding Week, I would like to share a personal story with you: Here is a photo of me with my firstborn from almost two years ago, who was 22 months old at the time.... I was sitting at the platform of the MTR Central Station nursing her with one hand holding a handheld fan to cool her down and my other arm supporting her body. At the time, the Central station only had a Babycare room and not a breastfeeding room. We would need to run or brisk walk to search for the Babycare room, which was not feasible at the time as she was already fussing. I was left with no choice but to nurse her under a nursing cover in the waiting area of the platform. Despite covering myself, I still had the awkward stares from commuters. The stares, however, would not have stopped me from nursing my child in public because I was aware that not everyone would understand my child’s needs. I had a bumpy start with nursing my firstborn, which included contracting mastitis three days after postpartum, feeling stressed about dealing with a newborn who had difficulties latching for the first weeks of life, and more. I was fortunate to have a supportive partner who believed in the benefits of breastfeeding and witnessed the struggles I experienced. Most importantly, he believed in me and provided encouragement during challenging times. As time passed, breastfeeding became natural and my little one was weaned off at 2.5 years old. I enjoyed nursing my children as it creates a special bond between us, a bond that is indescribable and irreplaceable. I understand breastfeeding is not meant for everyone, but if you are an expectant mom who is thinking about breastfeeding, or a mother who had nursed your children, feel free to share your thoughts and experiences. Late June to early July is the best time for strawberry picking. Last week we took our little ones on a day trip to one of the strawberry farms to pick our own strawberries. My eldest one was ecstatic about her first experience in picking her own strawberries. She did not only get her first farm experience, she also learned where foods come from (and not from grocery stores). Getting children exposed to where food comes from allows them to build positive relationships with ...foods. You may be pleasantly surprised that the locally grown, pick your own strawberries taste significantly sweeter than the store bought varieties, despite being smaller in size. We got more strawberries than we could enjoy in one or two meals, so we decided to freeze them. To extend the shelf life of strawberries, we spent a few hours washing them with vinegar, removing their stems, patting them dry with paper towels on a flat surface before storing them in the freezer. While prepping them for freezing was a ton of work, we can now enjoy locally grown strawberries beyond summer. How are you enjoying your summer? School is out for my little one due to the pandemic. Thankfully, she recently has developed an interest in cooking with me in the kitchen. Learning to cook is an excellent skill to develop at a young age. For one, the kids would not be watching the tv or the tablet all day long, and for two, they are learning a new skill which they can put to use when they become adults and live on their own. If you have kids, are they interested in getting involved in the kitchen?... #registereddietitian #kidsinthekitchen #foodskillsforkids # # #

Last week I received several messages from friends and clients about seeing me on TV. Apparently one of my interviews with Leisure Talk at Fairchild Television from last year was rebroadcasted. If you missed the interview last year (or last week), and would like to learn more about the common issues and solutions to picky eating in children, click here: https://youtu.be/YpWgSuZIaYA #registereddietitian #mediainterview #pickyeatinginchildren #healthyeating ... https://youtu.be/YpWgSuZIaYA # # # #

Storing fresh produce is an art and a science. Did you know some vegetables and fruits such as apples and onions emit ethylene, a natural gas which accelerates the ripening process of produce that is placed nearby? To find out how you can preserve your fresh vegetables and fruits longer, read on from my first postpartum media interview with Global News. #registereddietitian #mediadietitian #mediainterview #storingfreshproduce ...
