Did you know that only 16% of Canadian adults and 39% or children and youth currently meet physical activity guidelines and that COVID-19 has only made it worse? The estimated total health care costs of inactivity in Canada in 2009 was over $6.8 billion but the good news is that the solution is fun - movement is the medicine and physical activity benefits us all: https://ipolitics.ca//canadas-active-recovery-from-covid-/ Getting 10% of Canadians with suboptimal levels... of physical activity to exercise more would substantially reduce the incidence rates for major chronic conditions. Welcome to our Fall into Fitness Challenge!! If you haven’t already heard this program will run from October 1st-30th 2020. The goal of this challenge is to earn 25 points per week by engaging in these major components of fitness: *cardiovascular exercise, *resistance training ... *flexibility training The point structure will work as follows: * 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise is worth 3 points. * 6 -10 Resistance or weight training exercises = 2 points * 5 minutes of stretching or flexibility work = 1 point * A LW exercise session would therefore earn a member 6 points - as it typically covers all three of these areas. There will be a draw for a prize at the end of the month for 1 lucky member! Win Wednesday! This week we are celebrating improved Blood Pressure! Did you know that having high blood pressure and not getting enough exercise can be closely related? ... The risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) increases for all of us as we age, however, incorporating exercise into your lifestyle can make a big difference! If your blood pressure is already high, then exercise can help you control it. At LIVE WELL our highly trained staff of Kinesiologists will design a customized program for you that will incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. According to the Mayo Clinic Regular physical activity is proven to make your heart stronger, which means your heart can pump more blood with less effort. If your heart can work less to pump, the force on your arteries decreases, lowering your blood pressure. Becoming more active can lower your systolic blood pressure the top number in a blood pressure reading by an average of 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). That's as good as some blood pressure medications. For some people, getting some exercise is enough to reduce the need for blood pressure medication.
