One of my stops on my summer journey was the "ghost-town" of Truax, SK. I discovered, however, that it wasn't a ghost town at all! I happened to stop at their community hall at happy hour to ask for some directions and ran into the most hospitable people including Judy Elias. After hundreds of kms of solitary driving, I was thrilled for the visit, the photo tips, and the Pepsi they sent me with for the road! Look for the heart above the elevator in the vertical photo. Which is your favourite?
Bucket List Shot: for years, I've wanted to see and photograph a lineup of combines in a field. I finally had the chance this week during harvest on land my father and grandfather both farmed. This year a new generation took over the farming for my dad. Thanks to Tyler Clowes with Jordan Hildebrand and Brady Funk's crew for the idea and setting up the shot for me. It was a thrill for dad and I, and I only hope Grandpa Neil could peak down from Heaven as he would have been so proud! Feel free to share!
I'd love to know your favourite between last week's shot and this one. Like or comment on your favourite! SK natives may have wondered where the town of Promise was and why they hadn't heard of it! If you look closely, you will see the left side of the elevator says "Brooking." The town of Brooking, first homesteaded in 1905, now consists of about 5 eerily abandoned homes in the middle of a field. Promise and the John Hawke & Co is the 1999 "Revenge of the Land" movie creation. These sunset moments were one of the highlights of my trip: stillness in the middle of nowhere, with echoes of the past lingering in the air around me. Feel free to share!
3 days, 1270 kms, 25 churches, 22 elevators and wide, open living skies were my company as I explored south central SK between Swift Current and Weyburn. Stay tuned for photos and stories from the journey, and feel free to tag those from the area to follow along. My favourite elevator and most sacred evening was from "Promise," SK. Does anyone know the story behind this elevator or have any theories?? I'd love to hear them and will tell you more in the next post!
