Despite well over a foot of snow on the ground, and drifts over our waists, we are still busy at LSWR! Today alone, we took in 6 birds!! This Common Loon is one of the unusual ones... Found by some deer hunters, it was probably grounded in the storm and could not take off from land. It is a bit thin and dehydrated. We are hoping it just needs a ride to open water to continue its journey south.... He will want some SMELT in the morning!!... Then the Northern Hawk Owl turned out to be an Adorable Boreal Owl! The poor thing has some neurologic symptoms suggesting he may have been sideswiped by a car. Pretty quiet, and not as feisty as he should be..... We've got some fluids, pain meds and anti-inflammatory on board, so let's hope he gets some rest overnight. Sometimes I wish my day would end at 5pm, so we could have a TGIF kinda evening, but really, I think I'd rather get to meet these amazing and resilient creatures, with the opportunity to give them a second chance! That is MY TGIF kinda night.... HUGE thanks to the WRSOS transporters of these animals from the ends of the province into our hands!!!! (Pam, Brad, Billy!!)

The window strike birds continue to pour in. Many, like the kingfisher and this Tennessee warbler, become slightly paralyzed from the trauma. Only time will tell if it can recover or not, thankfully this little guy is so easy to feed! #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #tennesseewarbler #warbler #migration #windowstrikesagain #windowstrikeskillbirds

This course is excellent if you are committed to helping wildlife. It is one step of Many toward obtaining your permit as a Rehabilitator. We always encourage folks to volunteer first so they know what kind of commitment is required.

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation 03.08.2020

This beautiful Belted Kingfisher hit a window. It hit it so hard it chipped the tip of its knife-like beak and gave the bird irreparable spinal damage.. window strikes occur more during migration times but they will occur all year for all time until windows become bird friendly. If you have birds hitting your windows please get window treatments! Wild Bird Unlimited has plenty of variety and advice. Birds do not always fly away or leave a window strike unscathed! More than likely they need serious help or die from injuries. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #windowstrikesagain #windowskillbirds #birdfriendlywindows

This young Red Tailed Hawk went out for release yesterday and flew beautifully! Before release we always live feed test our raptors. It may seem like a cruel practice but releasing something without it knowing how to hunt will just lead to death by starvation, and thats cruel. Animals eat animals, thats how nature works and we must follow those rules when it come to rehabbing and releasing wildlife! #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #redtailedhawk #raptor #releasemehuman

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation 15.06.2020

The three Barn Swallows are ready to go, and we have a possible place to release them where someone has some recently fledged babies! The Purple Martin will miss them for sure, he was seeming lonely when all the other PUMAs were released as he was not ready and now has missed migration. We have successfully overwintered Purple Martins before so hoping the time will be the same. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #barnswallow #aerialinsectivores #migration

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation 26.05.2020

This little one hit a window but was unable to recover and passes away overnight. Fall and spring we see the highest amount of window strikes as birds are now migrating and there are many juvenile birds who have never experienced human cities now trying to navigate death traps such as windows, cats, cars, dogs, fences etc etc. Please help them through it as much as you can by using window treatment such as dots and tape, keeping cats indoors, cleaning up netting, fishing line and other garbage that they can get caught in and many other wildlife friendly options. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #hummingbird #rubythroatedhummingbird #windowstrikesagain

Releasing a Red Eyed Vireo that hit a window but recovered the next day :). Always a good story when they can be released as quickly as possible when no major injuries were sustained. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #redeyedvireo #windowstrikes #windowstrikesagain #windowtreatments #savebirds

The Horned Grebe admiring itself in the mirror. Its been touch and go with the grebes- as it always seems to be, they are quite finicky. Thankfully, this one seems to really be improving *knock on wood* and be releasable soon! #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #hornedgrebe #grebe #justfloatplease

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation 22.02.2020

Its that time of the year for injured and starving raptors. We get many in late summer and fall as the juveniles begin to disperse from their parents and then have to put the skills theyve learned to the test into feeding themselves. Some are not as successful, and many new hunters get into trouble with unforeseen factors such as fences, power lines, cars and farm equipment. Keep an eye for these masters of the sky above, and below in ditches and fields. #livingskywildliferehab #wildlifetehabilitation #wildliferescue #ferruginoushawk #swainsonshawk #hawk #raptor #migration @ Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation

Releasing the adult House Wren that had to stay with us for two weeks on antibiotics after being caught by a cat. Cats mouths and claws are a breeding ground of bacteria and quickly becomes deadly to birds if not treated with antibiotics ASAP. Within 24 hours a bird will die from a cat even licking it and the bird preening itself and injecting that bacteria. Cat Scratch Fever is the human equivalent to the same bacteria from cats. #livingskywildliferehab #wildlifetehabilitation #wildliferescue #housewren #keepcatsindoors #keepcatssafe #keepwildlifesafe #catscratchfever

Out for a walk along the river and what do we find? Some Gulls in need. One had old fishing line with a rusty hook stick in its nostril, and the other very sad and skinny. We also picked up a lot of fishing line and it never stops collecting on shore and becoming a hazard to wildlife... please dont litter, it really doesnt take that long to clean up. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #humantrash #fishingline #cleanupfishinggear #gull #ringbilledgull #herringgull #californiagull @ Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation

With the hard work of some amazing volunteers; Erin, Sarah and the rest of the very helpful group, they are slowly improving the duck area! It always been a challenge to simultaneously keep clean, dry, have grass, have protection from predators, easy to manage the ducks etc. When you have so many ducks the grass can quickly turn to mud and then to puddles and then to holes where they have dabbled . One by one we will make it better! The big Redhead duck seems to claim the new pool all for itself. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #ducks #ducklings #mallard #gadwall #redheadduck

Releasing the recovered young PUMAs into a purple martin colony. Not many left around as migration is upon them! This particular colony has had a tough year, the colony seems to be dropping in number and it lost 90 young this year. Not sure if it was predation of the parents or just not enough food. It seems to be a trend with all aerial insectivores. If we keep using pesticides, they dont have food and they will starve :(. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #purplemartin #aerialinsectivores #saveinsects

Weve seen quite an increase of animals this year compared to last. It might be a combination of more people are stuck at home and finding animals in need, maybe even more people know about us, what we have found this year is an increase in gun/pellet shot victims... Pigeons, crows, owls, ducks, Hawks, Gulls, it doesnt matter what it is. It seems that some people are bored stuck at home and thought maybe I can hit that was entertaining. Most of the time these animals do not die instantly, they suffer for days with broken bones and blood loss, starving to death and in pain.. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #gunshotwound #pelletwound #protectedbird #humanssuck

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation 16.11.2019

Weve got a pretty full stack of Purple Martins on the swallow perch now! Each have their own story; one was covered in bot flies, another drenched in blood- not his own! One a window strike, some others orphaned and a new one with what appears to be a strange feather growth mutation. They all appear to be growing the wrong way and the flight feathers dont seem to have the barbs on the vanes to zip them together. Would love to get a view of one of his feather under the microscope to confirm when we have the time (haha) but for now Ruffles will hang out with the others. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #purplemartin #swallows #aerialinsectivores #saveswallows #featheroutofplace @ Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation

Thank you Sharon for getting us some wonderful medical supplies! We use a lot of different, seemingly unrelated items to care for all the animals, whenever someone asks us what we need my mind tends to go blank because there is just so much! This poor little House Sparrow is a literal balloon. Birds have air sacs in addition to their lungs, and when one of these air sacs ruptured, from something like a fall, it will leak into their body and under the skin. This is a pretty severe case and the best thing to do is wait it out, let the air sac heal and then the air can be reabsorbed. If we drained the air it would simply refill as the air sac is not yet repaired. #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #housesparrow #airsacrupture #balloonbird @ Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation

Its not often we get a new mammal species into the Center, but last night was an interesting one! A couple of very caring people were taking care of their friends acreage where there are- unfortunately- free roaming cats. They came across a cat with a mouse in its mouth and managed to rescue it! As you can see from the tail this is no ordinary mouse, this is a Meadow Jumping Mouse and its just about the most beautiful cutest amazing mouse Ive ever been lucky enough to see and handle . It survived the night so heres hoping for a full recovery! #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #mouse #meadowjumpingmouse #jumpingmouse #micearenice

We pulled out 3 bot fly larvae from this poor Purple Martin nestling and cleaned another 5 or so holes were other larvae had already matured and left. That is A LOT of blood loss for a small bird. Were not sure if it will make it but it was perking up after a few hours of warmth, food, and dew worm blood from when we cut up the big worms for the Robins. A transfusion would be the ideal but without knowing blood types and all those complications, at least a giving fluids plus... the building blocks of blood was very helpful for it!- as gross as it might be, blood is very nutritious. Purple Martins migrate to even warmer places then here so they can stand plenty of heat, they are not good with the cold though. Hoping the little vampire will pull through #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #purplemartin #botflylarvae #bloodgood See more

Shes such am amazing creature. In the summer, porcupines will also swim out into ponds and sloughs to munch on water lillies! They crave the salt that many pond plants have. If anyone has some fresh branches of native tree species and pond plants, she would love them! Also best to get her used to as many natural foods as possible. Sorry porky, but you wont find cucumbers in the wild! Unless you raid a garden . #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #northamericanporcupine #porcupine #munching #munchkin

What is this tiny adorable floof? Its a young snowshoe hare. Hares, including the larger and more common Jackrabbit are still having babies in and around the city. If you spot any babies it is best to leave the hare there! Unless you see any blood, obvious trauma, not standing or laboured breath please leave the bunny alone! It has a mom and she visits them in the morning and evening to try and limit attention- and therefore, the chance a predator will find it. Bunnies are... also FOOD for many many other creatures. If a rabbit is being attack by a NATURAL predator, please let nature take its course! It would be very counterproductive to take away food from native wildlife when that predator will then just have to go find another one to eat- and the food you took away, I.e. the bunny will most likely not survive in rehab anyway. It may be harsh but thats how nature works! Fortunately this little guy was found on a path and the finder was worried they stepped on him. He was deemed ok and put back where he was found! #livingskywildliferehab #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferescue #snowshoehare #hare #bunny #putthebunnydown #circleoflife @ Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation See more
