All children are born with a blank slate upon which they can place their dreams. I know of many children who dreamed of being: a dancer, teacher, musician, doctor, firefighter, scientist, actor or athlete. All children want to amount to something! All journeys require that we take one step at a time. The doll-making journey is no different. I really struggle with some dolls in attempts to turn it into what I had in mind. It is so important to me that the dolls I make are well-loved. For this one, I dyed the fabric before cutting and sewing; but now, looking at its form, I am not content with the colour. I have always been a bit skittish about the chemical smell of new textiles found in fabric stores. But, I miss the soft hand of fabric. Currently, no longer able to shop for fabrics, I’ve turned up-cycling gentle used clothing to make doll clothing. This was a dress meant for a two-year; now, cut down and modified, it is a dress for a 28 inch doll! What do you think of how it turned out?

A name not only serves as one’s identity, it can also convey a wealth of information. Saying a name, and pronouncing it correctly conveys respect and acknowledgement. I often ask children to choose a name for their dolls; or, I use the child’s middle name. The doll’s mom chose: Amaris. I Googled the name, here are my findings: Amaris is Hebrew meaning ‘Promised by God’ and Spanish meaning ‘Child of the moon’. This name is one of timelessness and sparkle.... Amaris is beautiful and making her happy will make you happy. She's a reliable friend. So, if you have an Amaris in your life, make sure she knows how much you respect and appreciate her."

It’s time to ring out the old. I designed and made this dress about 36 years ago, to wear on a first date; it was a New Year’s Eve gathering. Snagged my husband that evening! Maybe that is why I kept the dress. As it no longer fits, and my favourite fabric store is now closed, I will cut a quarter meter from the dress to make a new one for a doll. After all, the doll’s mom wants a red dress and I have no red material suitable for the dress she requested. Anyway, I’ll be ringi...ng in the new year by making a habit of re-using beautiful fabrics that spark joy for me and clients. I’m taking all the positivity that I can mutter up into the new year.
