Avoid being too passive or too hyperactive during these times. Your people need to know you’ve got yourself under control and are steering the ship in the proper direction. ... 2. Step back to reflect from what’s going on, learn from it, and strategize moving forward. 3. Take action to check in with everyone regularly because you’re not seeing your team every day around the office, so you may have to make a point of reaching out. You may also have to get better at sensing when someone could use a bit of extra support. 4. Adaptability. As the world constantly evolves and adapts to new situations and crises, so too do the workings of organizations worldwide, which require developing new skills. Employees grow, roles morph, and as a result of that, people need to constantly be acquiring new skills. We are approaching the Talent Cliff. Be empathetic. In today's ‘work from home’ and ‘isolated office’ environments, leaders need to be very cognizant of the stresses that come with working with home.... Acknowledge the stress. It is as real as it gets. There’s a lot going on, so Leaders need to remember that people are also struggling with personal and family issues beneath the business issues. The best leaders have an openness about them and put others in the forefront. You need to Tell people you care about them vs. the business only. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Acknowledge the stress and express to your people you care about them. Practice Self-Empathy Give yourself a break. Don’t beat yourself up. These are challenging times, and the same empathy you give to others so freely, could go a long way with yourself. Be flexible. Leaders need to strike a balance between structure and flexibility by having a set time for meetings while allowing team members to do what they need to do before and after, whether that’s getting their kids ready for the day or taking some time to work out after work.
