Replace your smoke alarm batteries every time you change your clocks. You will also want to test them monthly to make sure theyre working. If you arent sure theyre working properly, its time to replace them. #TipTuesday #FirePreventionWeek
If you aren’t sure where to start after a flood, I recommend consulting an expert. Here’s a list of tips on how to deal with mould after flooding that Concrobium Mold Solutions has put together.
As the leaves begin to fall off the trees, you will want to regularly check your eavestroughs to clear out debris before they freeze. Clogged eavestroughs and d...ownspouts will freeze into a channel of frozen muck in the winter, and will eventually warp the eavestrough due to overloading. #TipTuesday See more
Did you know the average home loses about 30% of its heat due to drafts? Check the caulking around windows and doors yearly as they may be a source of heat loss and need to be replaced. #TipTuesday
Take it from Mike Holmes - buying a house without a home inspection is like playing Russian roulette with your finances. If you lose a bid on a home that is overpriced and in major disrepair, you dont want it. Learn more about buying it right.
Most homeowners don't think they have time to check references, but believe me you do! Call past clients to check out the contractor’s work. It is your job to ask questions. As soon as you think you’re asking too many, remember how much you’re investing into your reno. #TipTuesday
If you're thinking about building something on your property - like a shed - make sure you check your municipality's rules and restrictions and whether or not y...ou need a permit. I've seen some beautiful custom sheds that need to be taken down because the structure doesn't meet city guidelines. This National Post article will explain how to build your shed right. #TipTuesday See more

A couple weeks ago someone asked "How can you ensure a future buyer that your home inspection was done by a professional who is neutral?" This is a great quest...ion and we wanted to share with the class. 1. Make sure your home inspector is registered with CAHPI or ASHI, this will mean they have been trained and must uphold the ethics of the association to be part of it 2. Find the inspector yourself with research and let the buyer know you did this on your own and it was not an industry referral 3. Provide the contact information of the inspector, his years of experience and training with the report so it is transparent In the "buyer beware" world we live in you will always have some suspicion the report is biased but do these steps and you will do more than most to show it is legit. www.mikeholmesinspections.com
Indoor air quality is compromised during indoor construction projects and remodeling jobs. The adhesives, glues, and treatment processes (painting, varnishing, ...etc.) are filled with VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and Formaldehyde. Are you aware of which materials do not significantly off-gas (drywall, wood, tile, and stone) and which ones do (laminates, veneers, carpeting, and vinyl)? The impact of VOCs and Formaldehyde once construction is complete will depend in part on the amount of ventilation available among other things. VOC levels can remain high months after a project is complete, but will dissipate over time. Its important to have your air quality checked after a remodeling to make sure youre family is safe. A Healthy Home inspection from Mike Holmes Inspections includes VOC, formaldehyde and radon testing. Learn more and book your healthy home inspection today!
Some good tips on Home Inspection.
The most important questions to ask when you are hiring a home inspector: 1) How long have you been in business as a home inspector? 2) Did you have any exper...ience in the building trades before becoming an inspector? 3) Do you belong to a professioal association of home inspectors? 4) Can you provide atleast 10 references from people who have hired you in the past?
