HAPPY EASTER from the Lobby Gallery
Meet The Lobby Gallery artist, Nikki Jacquin. Nikki Jacquin, a full-time portrait artist for 25 years, is also a respected organizer of international painting h...olidays. For three years, Nikki enjoyed the role of a paid Guest Artist-in-Residence at the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park in Saskatchewan, through the Art in the Park Program of the SK Arts. While there, Nikki was inspired to explore the trails as a metaphor for labyrinths and pilgrimages. She found hiking to be a contemplative practice that grounded her spiritually. The resulting work from these hikes was an exploration of copper plate and leaf as a medium. Nikki employs chemical etching, carving, and embossing, along with many other techniques. Unpainted passages reflect light back to the viewer much in the same way the light on the trails would. Nikki uses only repurposed copper to be environmentally conscious. Similar to past explorations with new materials or techniques, this new found information has refreshed Nikki's approach to portraiture. In 2018, Nikki was honoured to be named the YMCA Woman of Distinction receiving the Jacqui Schumiatcher Arts Award. To love plein air painting you must love nature in all her varied moods, embracing her warm and tender side as well as the tumultuous. - Nikki Jacquin Learn more about The Lobby Gallery and the artists they represent at http://www.reginapac.com/lobby-gallery.html. #SaskArt #IWD2021 #SaskGalleries Featured work: Nikki Jacquin, Fall Solitude, acrylic on repurposed copper plate, 16x12, $985, available at The Lobby Gallery

Meet Madhu Kumar (Madhu Kumar Art). Madhu was born and raised in India and came to Canada in 2001. She got her Canadian citizenship in 2008 and lived in Toronto... and Ottawa before moving to Regina in 2011. She is working on a series of large-scale paintings about the experiences of immigrant women in Canada. I feel for immigrant women. When you come to a different country, you have to learn many things. You left everything and came here. You have to start from scratch, she says. Madhu connected with women through the Immigrant Women’s Centre, went to their homes and listened to their stories. Her exhibition, Stories of Immigrant Women, is touring province-wide with the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils from 2020-23. Each painting has a message card and a video of the woman telling her story, accessible through an augmented reality app. Storytelling is at the core of Madhu’s work. I want to share those stories so I can uplift those women’s spirits. Not only the women I’m painting, but other women who can relate to these stories. The project had a profound effect on both Madhu and the women she featured. They have become more empowered. They are dealing with their traumas more confidently. They are very different people now, she says. Photo of Madhu Kumar by Mark Greschner *** Photographer Mark Greschner and SK Arts Communications Strategist Sabrina Cataldo are settlers on Treaty 4 Territory who wanted to learn more about artists from different backgrounds. They were honoured to hear these artists’ stories and amplify their voices, and their work on this series reflects SK Arts’ values around inclusivity and accessibility, as well as our strategic goals around the value of individual artists and providing access.
