Let’s Talk Broccoli. FROM YOUR IN-STORE DIETITIAN! Broccoli is a staple in my household! It’s delicious, nutritious and versatile. Read on for broccoli 101 and recipe inspiration. The word broccoli comes from the Italian word broccolo" which means the flowering top of a cabbage.... It's a member of the Brassicaceae family which also includes cabbage, kale, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Broccoli has many beneficial nutrients, including fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, potassium, manganese and folate. Store fresh broccoli in the refrigerator in an open bag, or mist the top and cover with paper towel to keep it fresh. Consume in 2-3 days. Enjoy broccoli raw or cooked. Back to School. FROM YOUR IN-STORE DIETITIAN! YES! It’s September. We’re all getting back to routine-- and despite Covid-- for many that means back to school lunches. I often tell my clients that lunches don’t need to be complicated think simple! Here are some of my top tips for taking the sweat out of school lunches: 1. A balanced lunch for school or work includes half a plate of vegetables (and fruit), a quarter of a plate of protein and a quarter of a plate of w...hole grains. You can choose any foods within those food groups that work for you! 2. Not sure what to make? Try a Bento Box. Kids love them! Here’s my son’s fave: carrots and snap peas (vegetables), cheese and edamame (protein), and triscuit crackers (whole grains). Let’s Talk Watermelon . FROM YOUR IN-STORE DIETITIAN! I’m Judy Chodirker, your In-Store Dietitian at Loblaws High Tech Rd. This week’s #LocalProduceHero is watermelon. It’s not too late to enjoy watermelon! There are still 18 days left of summer Watermelon is not only delicious but also very nutritious providing a boost of vitamins A and C, and lycopene, an antioxidant. Look for a firm, heavy, symmetrical melon with fully rounded sides and a yellowish underside. The ...yellow is normal and shows that the watermelon ripened in the field. If cut, select a melon with bright red, firm flesh. Whole melons will keep for 7 to 10 days at room temperature. If stored too long, they’ll lose flavour and texture. Refrigerate cut watermelon in an airtight container for 3-4 days. My favourite way to enjoy watermelon is the Mediterranean way: cut watermelon into cubes and add chunks of feta and fresh mint.
