February is Heart Month, both Valentine Hearts and Healthy Hearts. While Valentine Hearts may come with flowers and chocolate, Heart Month comes with advice about heart health. Is Chocolate Heart Healthy? Chocolate comes from cocoa beans which contain flavonoids. Flavonoids are antioxidants that help the body repair damaged cells, which may reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases. Foods rich in flavonoids include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds an...d beverages including green tea and wine. Further research is required to determine recommendations on amounts of these foods on cardiovascular health. In the meantime, enjoy all these foods. Remember All Foods Fit and that healthy eating should be tasty and enjoyable! Healthy ways to enjoy chocolate: Choose dark chocolate. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are the least processed and have the highest levels of flavonoids. Keep portion sizes small and enjoy! Take a balanced approach and savour your favourite piece of chocolate. Melt dark chocolate and drizzle over antioxidant-rich fruits, such as berries. Limit chocolate with candy coatings as these are higher in calories and sugar. Dark Chocolate, Almond and Pumpkin Popcorn 8 cups popcorn (air-popped or plain microwave popcorn) 1 bar (100 g) PC 85% Cocoa Dark Chocolate, chopped cup silvered almonds cup pumpkin seeds 1. Spread popcorn on parchment paper-lined large baking sheet; discard any burned or unpopped kernels. 2. Place chocolate in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 20 seconds; stir and repeat until melted. Stir until smooth. Drizzle half of chocolate over popcorn; sprinkle with almonds and seeds. Drizzle with remaining chocolate. 3. Freeze until chocolate is firm, about 10 minutes. Break into bite-size pieces. Serve immediately. Store in an airtight container. The popcorn is best served on the day it’s made, but can keep for a few days. Did you make this recipe? Let me know how it turned out for you! Contact Maria for meal planning and recipe ideas. Cookie or pie? PC The Decadent Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie is match made in dessert heaven. There are a growing number of irresistible confectionery combos out there, but the greatest dessert matchup of all time, in our opinion, just might be this one. If the crust is like a crisp chocolate chip cookie, then the middle tastes like a soft, not-quite-set cookie
This holiday season our food development wizards have put a fresh new spin on Neapolitan ice cream, swapping the usual stripes for a combination of peppermint, chocolate and marshmallow flavors in one enticing medley.
