As some of you might know for the last decade or so I have been a member of the executive board (Sergeant at Arms) of the Hamilton Musicians’ Guild (Local 293 o...f the A.F.ofM.). I would like to take this opportunity to pass along to my fellow musicians the news that until March 31st the Local is waiving Federation and Local initiation dues (normally $105). This makes it a great time for new and returning members to come on board. Of course, the last two years have been particularly trying for the local given our members general inability to gig. Nevertheless, we have been working hard to weather the storm. During that time, we have awarded a number of one-time grants from the Bob Pedler fund to members who have been unable to perform due to medical crises, Last spring we arranged for dozens of our members to participate, through the Musicians’ Performance Trust Fund, in live streams that paid union scale to all. Of course, we are always facilitating P2 Visas for members who have the opportunity to play concerts and festivals south of the border. Our local was also instrumental in obtaining an agreement with the municipal government that ensures that musicians are fairly paid for any events staged by the City of Hamilton. This is a ground-breaking agreement that is unique throughout Canada and, in fact, North America. Finally, and most importantly, it was due to the concerted efforts of AFM Vice President for Canada Alan Willaert that musicians were included in last year’s CERB benefits. The winners of the 2021 Music Cities Awards will be announced on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.... The Music Cities Awards is a global competition designed to acknowledge and reward the most outstanding applications of music for economic, social, environmental, and cultural development all around the world. The City of Hamilton’s Musicians Fair Payment Policy supports and increases community awareness of the importance of paying musicians fairly for their music performances.
