Fun Fact Friday! Leave your leaves! With the warmer weather and receding snow, it's tempting to think about getting your leaf litter raked up. However, ladybugs and other beneficial insects still need shelter while the nights remain cold. With warm days and cooler nights, the leaf litter protects your plant roots as well! kazuend
Fun Fact Friday! Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere will welcome the first day of spring with the spring equinox on Saturday, March 20, 2021! At this time, day and night are the same length, but moving forward, the days get longer and the long nights become a memory. Every day brings us closer to the first crocus poking its fuzzy flower through the snow. Do you feel spring fever? Photo: Ward Cameron
Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that the first Pussy Willows in Alberta come out in early February? These are the first stage of the willow's flower and the fuzzy cover helps to keep them warm until they're ready to take advantage of the wind to spread their pollen to neighbouring flowers. Next time you're wandering alongside local rivers or creeks, look for these "furry" flowers. With many different willow species here, the flowers range from white, silver/grey to brown. When you find them, smile and know that spring is on the way! Photos by Rafa Rudol and Ward Cameron
Fun Fact Friday! In our corner of the world, the robin is often thought of as the harbinger of spring. The American Robin can produce three broods in one year, although only 40% are successful and only 25% of the young make it to November. While they can live up to 14 years, sadly only half a population will make it to the next year. Watch for their distinctive red-orange breast, listen for their song and comment below if you have had your first robin sighting! Daniel Roberts
Fun Fact Friday! Did you know Canmore gets it's water from above and below the surface? Pumphouses transfer Bow River water from the Rundle Forebay, while other areas are fed by underground sources. Take a moment to check out the interpretive signs along the Bow River trails for more of the story! Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that moose are well known to lick the salt off roads and vehicles? We call that a "Canadian Car Wash", but it's really not very good for the moose. While moose require some salt in their diet, they can get it from natural sources, and if they get used to being close to people, there is a danger to both moose, vehicle, and visitor. Remember, people and wildlife don't mix, so keep at least 30 meters away and enjoy them from a distance! Fun Fact Friday! Did you know Lawrence Grassi has two lakes, a mountain, a street, and a school named after him. Grassi was an Italian who worked as a coalminer in the Canmore mines. He loved to hike and climb in the mountains and was well-known in the region as a guide, mountain climber, and trail builder and built many hiking trails in the area and around Lake O'Hara. Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that some of Alberta's earliest archaeological sites are near Canmore and Banff? In fact, Vermillion Lakes revealed some of the countries earliest known human remains during widening of the Trans-Canada Highway. These sites were estimated to be occupied approximately 10,500 years ago! With the majestic Mount Rundle in the background, these scenic lakes are worth a visit!
Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that the Rocky Mountains are home to ammolite, a beautifully coloured organic gemstone made of the fossilized shells of ancient relatives of modern squids known as ammonites. Next time you're staying at the Lodges at Canmore, visit the Ammonite Factory and check out Alberta's gemstone. https://www.ammonite-factory.com/
