KC VanNatta, of VanNatta Brothers Logging, did not see the Quadco 4400 feller head on display at the February 2020 annual logging conference in Eugene, Oregon. ...However, his brother Robert did. When Robert told him how it would let a single operator cut and control the placement of trees up to 48 inches in diameter and then load them on the truck, KC headed for the Internet to find out how he could get one. Eight months later, VanNatta’s crew was operating the first and only feller head of its kind in North America. The Quadco 4400 (QB4400) was invented by New Zealander Paul Ricco to harvest the fast growing, but brittle and limby, Radiata pine. Quadco saw the need for it in North America and about two years ago, they bought the patent, tweaked the design, and started production. Kirk Luoto, Northwest Forestry Specialist Territory Manager for Modern Machinery’s Portland office, facilitated the sale. I’ve known KC for many years and wasn’t surprised that he would be interested in adding the QB4400 to his operation, Kirk said. As a private landowner, his 1500-acre mixed rotation operation was a perfect match, and he had a big enough machine to put it on. The 4400 will handle big trees because of the maximum sock that can do a 50 or 55-inch bar. Kirk adds that the QB4400 can update a logger’s old equipment for the 21st Century. The tools in the equipment cab and in the office are becoming just as important as the tools used in the field by today’s loggers because modern communication systems and devices are helping to drive greater efficiency. Essentially, this technology is reducing the amount of guesswork and anxiety for loggers related to day-to-day logging operations on a number of fronts, including equipment deployment, monitoring production volumes, andat the end of the daythe financial heal...th of the company. Dickinson Logging of Hinton, Alberta, is a good example of how companies can benefit from these tools. Owned by Seth Dickinson and his wife, Charlotte, this stump-to-dump logging company was established in 2009. They started out as a sub-contractor, and in 2015 earned a harvesting contract with West Fraser Timber. They log about 400,000 cubic metres of both hardwood and softwood annually and have over 70 employees, including sub-contractors. The company has grown quickly and significantly over the past decade. With an interest in forestry for as long as he can rememberhe was born to a logging family in New BrunswickDickinson is excited by the benefits he is realizing from John Deere’s new, on-board, TimberMatic Maps, which is a web, cloud-based management platform, working in combination with his TimberManager planning and management software. Last month we asked several major equipment dealers in Canada how they are working with the current COVID-19 situationand what they have in the works for new logging equipment. We had the opportunity to speak with Finning, SMS Equipment, Great West Equipment, and The Inland Group. When The Inland Group was asked what they are excited about and what new logging equipment might be coming soon from the manufacturers they represent, they answered:... "Despite everything else going on, this has been a great year for new Tigercat products. Tigercat successfully launched the new purpose-built roadside processor. This package includes the 850E Carrier and 568 Processor Head. It is the only truly purpose-built roadside processor in its class. Industry-leading fuel economy, cooling capacity and revolutionary serviceability set the 850 apart from excavator conversions, while the 568 patented 4WD2WD auto-shift drive system maximizes productivity. Our Link-Belt 40 Series purpose-built forestry carriers continue to be a strong performer in the woods with Link-Belt actively working on product improvements for what the next generation of Link-Belt Forestry will look like. Keep an eye out for further information in winter 2021. We are also excited to announce the introduction into the wood waste and biomass market with the Tigercat 6050 Carbonator, which uses a carbon sequestration process to reduce wood debris onsite. The Tigercat 6900 Horizontal Grinder is another new material processor designed for maximum production and uptime. It comes in either 850, 1050 or 1200 horsepower options. Finally, we will see the first Tigercat six-wheel skidder with swing boom, the SB635H skidder, making its debut in B.C. this December. This will be the third ever swing boom off Tigercat’s production line. With all these exciting new products, we are looking forward to even more announcements and product launches in 2021." : Tigercat Read more of what The Inland Group, SMS Equipment, Great West Equipment, and Finning had to say: https://forestnet.com/LSJis/2020-july-august/delivering.php

On cut-to-length operations, the contractor most often handles both the harvesting and forwarding of the wood, to ensure timber gets to roadside promptly so it can get to millsand generate cash flow for contractors. Relying on a separate forwarding contractor can sometimes upset the flow of wood when machines are down, operators are not on shift or wood on the ground is buried by freak snow storms or unexpected thaws, and other extreme weather events. Harvesting contractors ...who rely on contracted forwarding have to build a deep trust relationship, in order to ensure the overall operation runs smoothly and timely. And, of course, the reciprocal of that practice is true as well: the forwarding contractor must rely on the harvesting side to have wood on the ground so that forwarders are productive, and cash flow is consistent and reliable. While not an official business entity, Eric Boissonneault and Marcel Coutoure are a very productive and complimentary team. Boissonneault owns three John Deere harvesters with Ponsse H8 heads and Coutoure operates two Ponsse Elephant King forwarders, in the Abitibi-Témiscaminque region in northwestern Quebec. The pair have been operating as a team, but maintaining separate businesses, for more than 10 years. We featured an article on this team in the July/August 2020 issue of Logging & Sawmilling Journal. "As our forestry customers have navigated the industry over the past year, some have expanded their business to work in complementary industries. We are excited to be dual-purposing what was once considered strictly forestry equipment to work in other applications. Gerard Ostroskie’s small sawmill operation in Ontario has a strong focus on increasing grade and value, and has developed an interesting niche market: producing cedar cuts specifically for canoe builders. Ostroskie invests a lot of effort to grade his inventory, which allows individual customers to pick the specific grade and size lumber for a project. Through trimming defects to increase grade, Ostroskie ends up with lumber as short as three feet. He says that many customer...s have projects that require short lengths, and they would rather pay for the shorter length, vs. buying a longer length and then ending up with the trimmed piece to store. On the other end of his marketing spectrum, Ostroskie also has 2 x 10 by 16-foot clear cedar lumber, which may end up in special projects such as long seats in saunas. The log supply is a combination of timber he harvests from his own woodlot, wood purchased from local farmers and small scale woodlot operators, as well as large scale contractors who require a market for their off species and oversized logs.
