This is new. I suspect this change is designed to catch house-hoppers people who build new homes for their own occupancy or who buy and substantially renovate homes for relatively short occupancy and quick resale, and repeat the process.. Be sure to get good legal and tax advice if you are thinking of becoming a hopper. You may not be entitled to the principal residence exemption that you were counting on, and, worse, all of the gain may be treated as income. Penalties and interest could apply.
