Long Dog Vineyard & Winery 11.05.2021

Long Dog Winery is open every day 12-5. You don't need to make a reservation, we have lots of outdoor space to accommodate everyone. Since the County opened it has not been a problem to welcome visitors back in the tasting room. Please note that masks are mandatory, but you are allowed to remove them for wine tasting.

We received exactly the same e-mail today, a warning to all PEC wineries.

Some people ask me why I am a fiscal conservative - and I point them to this chart. "In this world nothing can be said to be certain than death and taxes" - the... old saying goes - but PREDATORY taxation, fees and regulation are another matter altogether. In Ontario, Canada small family farm wineries quite literally pay some of the highest taxes and fees on Earth to run their small businesses - 73% (the best case scenario) to sell in our government monopoly stores. While we have to suffer with farm expenses (tractors, fuel, pruning, tying, weeding, picking grapes) plus winery expenses (corks, capsules, bottles, labels, yeast, labor, etc.) to get our best products to you and make this happen somehow within our paltry 27% allowable take. How can small Ontario family wineries compete with such insane costs? WE CAN'T. And that's why many small family winery owners actually have no choice but to work two jobs to make this dream happen in our province. Even my local grape grower representative in Prince Edward County works another career to bring in extra income. The U.S Federal Government provides a "Small Winery Tax Credit" to give the little farm wineries a break to help them grow. No such thing here in Ontario. The small family winery making only a few thousand cases a year has to pay the same taxes as the mega-winery companies who make millions of cases a year and dominate the shelves at our LCBO government monopoly stores - making a profit by selling volume cheaper, bulk, mass-produced, machine-harvested plonk and working the margins, rather than small-batch, higher-end, hand-picked artisan quality wines (There! I said it!). Oh, and by the way, these big Ontario producers are "grandfathered in" so they get their own wine stores around the province too (Wine Rack Store, Wine Cellar, etc.) - while the little family farm wineries get the shaft and are marginalized by law so they can ONLY sell in their little on-site retail stores ONLY on their farms. It's a wonder and miracle that Ontario has any small wineries at all! And probably the reason why most of you haven't heard of us - even though we are winning gold medals for our wines around the world - despite this crushing, anti-free-market treatment by our government who should be helping us grow - not keeping us down. I mean, isn't the point of good government to help the success and well-being of their citizenry? Clearly not here in Ontario when it comes to their treatment of small family wineries. Let me ask you this: if the government and quasi-government entities are taking 73% and I only can have 27% - and I'm paying for everything and doing all of the work - then clearly I work for them and not for myself - since they are taking the lion's share. So where's my government pension? Where's my drug plan? Where are my paid holidays? It's disgusting. Even the mafia in Italy doesn't take that much from small business owners. Why we are singled out is unfair and begs class-action litigation - as we have a right to a livelihood without undue predatory taxes, fees and regulatory encumbrances. PLEASE SHARE - and protest this injustice by writing Doug Ford and your MPP (provincial). Or, if you're from our area - reach out to our MPP's Daryl Kramp and Todd Andrew to support the end of these unfair fees, taxes, mark-ups and over-regulations that are crushing your local small family wineries - especially felt now during this Covid19 crises - and suffocating our industry and your ability to easily access our province's finest wines. This is Canada - not the USSR. You have a right to easily access our best stuff, and we have a right to feed our families under a reasonable taxation, fees and regulation structure. Click the link below on my recent CBC radio interview (about 5 minutes in from the start) as I stick up for the little guy: Ontario's Small Wineries. I must admit, I get pretty wound up towards the end. You would too if your government treated you and your small business this way... https://www.cbc.ca//15775408-ontario-morning-friday-may-8-

Veraison! After the awful cold wet spring the vineyard has been so behind (20 days late flowering) but now only about 9 days from normal. Here’s praying to the weather gods to help catch up for harvest. #canadianvineyards #pinotnoir #pecvineyards #weatherandfarming #prayforperfectweather #2019vintage
