Long Talks in the Woods 30.04.2021

Here's something to add to a sunny saturday afternoon: listening to a talk on climate science, postcapitalism, and imagining the future with Science Fiction Writer Kim Stanley Robinson. You're welcome.

What does colonialism have to do with the climate crisis? In short: everything. Colonialism is the action or process of settling among and establishing contro...l over the Indigenous people of an area. When colonizers like Columbus invaded the Americas they enslaved and murdered Indigenous people while also exploiting the land and resources they used. This lead to colonizers damaging ecosystems, clearing out forests and almost entirely wiping out the connection and ways that Indigenous peoples care and interact with the environment. In the 1970s mainstream environmentalists fought climate change by taking root in the same colonial mindset. They focused on controlling land through conservation which prevented Indigenous communities from accessing their ancestral sites, silenced front line communities and separated the ‘outdoors’ from our every day work and living environments. We need to be centering our climate justice work in anti-colonialism mindsets or else we will continue the same cycles that we are trying to stop. If we don’t get to the root of the issues we face then they will continue to hurt us and we will never truly get to create the world we know we deserve.
