The Long Point Biosphere Reserve is a stunning Great Lakes coastal ecosystem with a unique blend of habitats for human and non-human species alike. It’s also home to the highest densities of plants and wildlife in all of Canada! It encompasses most of Norfolk County and was designated a ‘biosphere’ by UNESCO in 1986. As a foundation governed by a board of directors and members, we work to enhance both ecosystem and community resilience so that all species thrive here to...gether. We can’t do it without your help! In recognition of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Long Point Biosphere Reserve translated a popular children's book into Ojibwe, the language of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the First Nation nearest to Biosphere Reserve. There were delays due to COVID 19, but the book has now been published! We are incredibly grateful to the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and staff at Lloyd S. King Elementary School for their collaboration on this pro...ject. Entitled Kaa Wiika Boontaake (Never Give Up), the colorful book tells the story of little Johnny’s determination to protect his friend Snapper and other turtles from heavy traffic. Written and illustrated by Long Point cottager Jan Everett, the story is based on her husband John’s efforts to save turtles along the Long Point Causeway, the unofficial gateway to the LPBR. Tomorrow is WANDERING WEDNESDAY! This week, we’ll be wandering the Shirley & George Pond Reserve. This is one of the Long Point Basin Land Trust properties that is being restored to protect a water source for Turkey Point Wetlands. Once restored, this 80-acre nature reserve along the Lake Erie shoreline will connect inland woodlands with coastal marshes and help connect 1.2km of forested stream corridor. The project will create an important wildlife habitat corridor, buffer ...interior forests and benefit water quality in an internationally-significant Great Lakes watershed and wetland, such as Forestville Creek, Turkey Point Marsh and Long Point Bay.
