November 11, 1918 - General Arthur Currie GOC Canadian Division, and his staff in the Grande Place of Mons, Belgium. The Great War was over at last. The 4th man... to Currie's right is MGen Edward Morrison GOC Canadian Artillery. Both men brought their horses back to Canada. Morrison's horse, King was part of his Ottawa funeral cortege in 1925. Currie's horse Brock is buried on his farm in Strathroy, Ontario. See more
Just west of Mons about this time in 1918 - "Bird!" It was the voice of the company-sergeant-major, harsh as a whip saw. Get your section ready at once. Battle ...order." The Mills brothers sat up. I managed to speak. "What's up?" I demanded. "We're going to take Mons. No use to argue about it. Get our men ready." "Just a minute." Tom Mills was on his feet. "The war's over tomorrow and everybody knows it. What kind of rot is this?" "Watch what you say." The sergeant-major's face was pale and set. He was not speaking in his normal voice at all. "Orders are orders. Get your gear on." Thomas Mills was killed by an enemy artillery shell on 10 November, 1918, just outside Mons. He is buried in the Mons Communal Cemetery just NE of Mons, on the highway to Brussels. From Will Bird's brilliant Great War memoir, "Ghosts Have Warm Hands."
Canada had more casualties in the "100 Days" to victory August 9 - November 11, 1918, than the rest of the years of the war combined. Most tourists go to the Vi...my memorial and Ypres, both of which are special and amazing. But the many less visited cemeteries of the "100 Days" tell the tale of the cost of ending the Great War. This is Cantimpre Canadian Cemetery in France, northwest of Cambrai. See more

Kindness Rocks in South Africa !
Now more than ever the world needs a little extra kindness! Because of health restrictions, the library can not facilitate more than a few people at a time to paint rocks. We would still like to see the program continue this year, so we will be leaving out paint for you at the bottom of the stairs. It’s our hope that you will take some paint to paint your rocks and return it for someone else to use. Some basic guidelines to follow if you are hiding rocks; remember to be ...respectful of private property and businesses. If you want to hide a rock at a local business, ask for permission first. Try not to hide them in grassy areas where it may cause damage to mowers or other machinery. Be careful not to place on walkways or anywhere it may cause someone to trip and fall. What if you find a rock? You can take it, keep it and if possible, post a picture on Longview Municipal Library’s Facebook page so the artist knows that it's been found. Or if you like, you can hide it somewhere else for someone else to find. The whole idea is to have fun, get outside, explore your community, and bring a smile to someone’s face. Whatever you decide to do we hope the rocks will bring a smile to YOUR face and encourage you to do the same for others! See more
