This year, Lorca's Granada: writers' retreat + colloquia received great news that Vancouver writer Jacqueline Turner became the first artist to be awarded a Can...ada Council grant to attend Lorca's Granada: writers' retreat + colloquia. She received the Council's and its peer jury members' support in the Arts Abroad programme. It was exciting to see Jacqueline in Granada at a time when the exhibition Un campo oscuro was on at the Centro Jose Guerrero- featuring work from creators like Mallarme, Magritte, and especially Ian Hamilton Finlay! It's an event like this that can occur- besides the visit to the Alhambra and Lorca sites. As in the past with past attendees, some work produced in Granada is being published in a new book by Jacqueline. It was exciting to see Jacqueline profiting from her Granada sojourn - and interacting with two other fine writers- Fiona Lam also from Vancouver and Lisa Bird-Wilson of Saskatoon. Granadino Jose Guerrero was an outstanding abstract expressionist who spent much time in the United States- throughout the extraordinary period of American visual art. Congrats Jacqueline on the grant!
