Lost Coast Woodworking 09.11.2020

A small black cherry cabinet I finally finished this week and delivered as a very overdue wedding gift to @ameliasheffieldbray and @jeffeatslocal I love building these small pieces where subtlety and sensitivity are essential and the wood is allowed to tell its own story. This piece has brass knife hinges, shop-made adjustable shelf consoles and a spring-loaded catch and is finished with @osmocanada Poly-X.

Lovely morning light on the waterfall desk I recently finished for our home. This was the piece I originally built as a long built-in desk with a waterfall at just one end. I shipped it to Texas last year but it was dropped by a forklift in Detroit and after a long and frustrating process it was eventually shipped back to me, nearly completely destroyed. I claimed insurance on it and built a new one from scratch which I delivered in March. But after a lot of repair work and head scratching I was able to turn the original into a free standing desk with two waterfalls that fits perfectly in our home and (future) study. It’s also pretty awesome to have the sister desk to my fantastic client Christy in Dallas!

Working on a new desk for our home. It’s nice to build something for us once in a while!

Never a bad idea to have a friend with a sawmill! Resawing twelve 2 thick x 8’ long hemlock planks would have been a task on the bandsaw that’s for sure.

Here are a few pictures of the 8’ black walnut desk we delivered and installed to Dallas, Tx this weekend along with the shelf and two printer risers (**chair by George Nakashima**) . I’m very happy with the result, and honoured and inspired to have my work in a beautiful home filled with original pieces by George Nakashima. Thank you Christy and family for the Texan hospitality, Benjamin Johnson for tagging along on the road trip and Victoria Johnson for supporting me in this venture even though it meant missing both Valentines Day AND Family Day If this desk looks at all familiar it’s because I built it once already, crated and shipped it to Texas but sadly it was largely destroyed in shipping. This was the second attempt, the upshot of which is that I was able to improve some aspects of the original design.

Some friends sent me this picture of a black cherry and Birdseye maple piano bench I built for them a few years ago, commissioned as part of surprise gift. The cherry just keeps darkening and deepening over time. I love that it’s part of the centre of their home. Thanks Eric and Alexa!
