WILDFLOWERS SPOTLIGHT: Alyssa Cross @alyssgetfit When I started planning the wildflower’s photoshoot, I immediately focused on choosing models who reflected the spirit of the design. The Kanien’kéha word for wildflower is ‘Kontatewenni:io Otsí:tsa’ (Niá:wen to my cousin Kahionwineshon for asking her Tó:ta Viola for the translation). That loosely translates to ‘they are out in the open - free’, and ‘they grow on their own.’ ... To me, that is who we are as Kanien’kehá:ka and Onkwehowe peoples: wildflowers growing through the cracks of colonization, despite all odds stacked against us. We are still here despite centuries of brutal assimilation tactics and the subsequent traumas meant to extinguish our spirits. We still bloom - year after year - on our original lands, even in the darkest of climates or most difficult conditions. I chose Alyssa as a model because she is beating the odds every day. She started her fitness journey as a means to give her daughter a better life. A true matriarch move. Change was the biggest challenge I faced, elaborated Alyssa. Breaking that cycle of bad habits that I was so used to, but with time and consistency change became my comfort zone. I found my true self with change.
