Meet Lovegrove Dermatology’s newest Physician Assistant: Nicole! As a PA, Nicole assists Dr. Lovegrove with things like taking patient histories, performing physical exams, ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosing and treating illness, prescribing medications, counseling patients and performing procedures. Most people wear sunscreen on sunny days in the summer, but did you know you should actually be wearing sunscreen all year long? The sun shines just as brightly on a cold day as it does on a hot day, and even short exposure on a cloudy day (like going outside for a walk or going for a ski) can add up with cancer causing and photo aging rays. On top of that, sun damage accounts for about 90% of signs of skin aging! We recommend using a mineral sunscreen daily because they pr...otect your skin from ultraviolet light as well as visible light. Ultraviolet light exposure has been linked to the development of skin cancer and pre-cancerous changes, as well as causing photo-aging (e.g. wrinkles and brown spots), and visible light can make conditions like melasma worse. We stock @alumiermdcanada sunscreens in clinic that are 100% mineral. Alumier sunscreens are also available online through our client portal, with different types for dry vs oily skin. Dr. Paradis is a Head and Neck Surgeon (aka an Otolaryngologist, or Ears-Nose-and-Throat doctor). Hands up if this year’s extra hand washing mixed with the colder weather has your hands feeling drier than ever! Dry, cracked hands or hand dermatitis can be an uncomfortable and irritating experience. It usually worsens as a result of exposure to irritants in your environment - eg, frequent hand washing! Here are some simple tips to give your hands some relief: Wash with a soap-free cleanser. Moisturize after every hand wash with unscented lotion. Avoid contact with ir...ritants (e.g. use gloves when cleaning, cooking or washing dishes). Keep your hands warm and dry (i.e. wear warm gloves or mittens when you’re outside). If your hands are really dry, try an intensive overnight treatment: soak your hands in warm water for a few minutes, then smear with vaseline jelly or your favourite hand moisturizer and wear cotton gloves overnight. It may be a bit messy, but your hands should feel much softer in the morning! The pandemic has meant lots of changes in our daily routines - not the least of which is regularly wearing a facial mask. As winter weather brings dry skin, there are a few ways you can make sure that your face is protected from any added irritation: Wash your face morning and evening with a gentle, fragrance free cleanser. A syndet cleanser is a great option as it will be less drying than a soap and has a closer pH to the skin’s natural pH level. Moisturize your face aft...er washing with a gentle, fragrance free facial moisturizer. Both the @canadiandermatologyassociation and the @eczemasocietyofcanada have published lists of products that they recommend, all of which are excellent choices. Look for SPF in your daytime moisturizer! If you wear a reusable mask, make sure you wash it regularly, with a gentle, fragrance free detergent. If your environment allows, consider using a humidifier in the drier winter months. Today is National Physician Assistant Day so we’d like to take a moment to celebrate our awesome PA Alexandra! Alexandra has been working at Lovegrove Dermatology for 2 years, since she graduated from the University of Toronto PA Program in 2018. We asked Alexandra to share a bit about why she loves being a PA. Here’s what she had to say: I often get asked the question "what is a PA?" A PA is a highly skilled health care professional trained under the medical model who ...provides a broad range of medical services under the supervision of a physician. Some of the things PAs can do include taking patient histories, performing physical exams, ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosing and treating illness, prescribing medications, counseling patients and performing procedures. I love being a PA working in dermatology because I get to treat a variety of different skin concerns. My favorite conditions to treat are acne and psoriasis because these conditions have a significant impact on our patients quality of life. I also love seeing strange and uncommon rashes as these push me to constantly be learning. Did you know that laser and light-based therapy is an effective treatment for wide a variety of skin conditions?
