Love In Bloom Cakes

Who would have thought instant coffee, gelatin and cornstarch would be so useful for this cake design? I made this cake for a breathtaking editorial last week, curated by an amazing team! And as per usual, I got lost inside my bubble while making this cake from 5am to I don’t even know what time I finished it, lol, it was so fun to make! I started with a blank canvas and a blurry idea of some of the elements I need to incorporate in it, totally didn’t plan anything specific f...or this design. No sketch. No notes. Totally just swam through the flowing creative juices I had that morning, patching up details by details as I go. And this drama queen was created! Fun fact about me, I have a short background in Fine Arts. It was the very first course I took when I was in university. Back then, I thought art should be perfect and flawless. I thought you have to use specific and expensive top quality materials to have a masterpiece. That’s the main reason I had to shift my course because we couldn’t afford the things I had to get to finish my projects. But somehow, art still find its way back to me. With a different mentality, I am able to enjoy it more, loving every flaws and imperfections in my work. Using anything that I already have and getting inspirations from the simple things that are around me, it changed the way I look at art. Now, for me, art is a bunch of unexpected things flowing in a beautiful maze of accidents and flaws waiting to be uncovered with open eyes and a creative mind. Like using instant coffee to paint the edges of the torn love letters on this cake. Or using gelatin and cornstarch to achieve this linen textures on this edible silk. Who would have thought that at times you lost sight of perfection, magic happens? Been diving into an ocean of emails since this morning. Went out to do errands. Did some mom things. And now working on a cake for a styled shoot tomorrow. Also making mini cakes in between. I love doing all of these, this is what I signed up for and I can’t see myself doing anything else, don’t get me wrong. But honestly, this extra hustling because of the Covid situation, just makes everything much challenging and harder than usual. A friend of mine sent me a card before ...with the saying If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. It’s the hard that makes it great. And I keep going back to this everytime things get too overwhelming. I just don’t want you to think that I don’t think of you. I really do. Just got back from an overnight mini family getaway with my little crew and I’m feeling recharged.
