A spring Balsam Fir distillation is one of my very favourites mostly for what it can do for us Find our Balsam Fir hydrosol in our Boreal Aromatherapy spray, soon to be released on it's own! In a 200 L copper still we distill the essence of Botanicals and Evergreens from this region. ... I carefully track the plants to look for the ones that I can distill. I start doing this in winter, in the bush, watching the trees, figuring out the ones that can be taken so that others can grow fully to light of the forest. Finding the right plant or tree to distill is an art. I don't simply arrive in the forest, and point to a tree and say that is the one I will distill. Once I have the tree next to the still, it takes about a full day to process the tree or plant. Every plant requiring a little bit different of care and processing. Evergreens need to be pre-soaked. Cedar, Balsam Fir, Spruce & Pine join the water Spirits who join with the Earth Magic for a day or two before we light up the fire, and the process of distillation begins. Distillation itself can take between 6 and 18 hours. Because I usually can't feel my legs anymore after this labour, I run the distillations into a cold room and then the next day I will process them again through a separating funnel. We ethically wild-harvest plants from the Muskoka - Parry Sounds forests. The journey of the plant to product is a unique and balanced one. I follow the plants, like a hunter who stalks and knows his prey. I know the life of the plant I harvest and use as medicine for myself and my community. The plant has to give me permission to use it, in order for it to be harvested. This way there is a respect, an understanding and permission for the medicine. ... This way of working with the plants, comes from the teachings of my blood line, the Cree, from Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta, and for the many teachers who taught me over the years, I am confident in my work, yet humble to always stay learning. The transition of seasons has me focusing on closing up the cycles of working with the plant & tree medicines of harvesting, distilling & extracting. I have spent the spring & summer reaping the harvests of more love and joy. This a human right we have to be free from perceptions & story lines that keep us in a state of lack, and of going on the same endless cycles that keep us trapped, and not feeling joy. Fired up white pine in the still, after taking large branches from a fresh pine down after the tornado in washago (yes officially a tornado). After processing the pine and taking it off the branches for a full day it's ready for pre-soak. I like to pre-soak my evergreen distillations for at least 12 hours before I fire up the still. The pine hydrosol smells very sexy, masculine sexy, a mix between an outdoors man and a conscious business man, like if you smelled it and saw ...the smell it would be a sexy man in half a suit and half outdoor gear lol.
