The Francis Hilb Preserve is a small preserve but it is packed with plenty to see! The area is a great spot for people who like botany and bird watching. This spot is also ideal for busy families who need a quick break from the city. Today we highlight Carden Cove, one of the access points along the Lake Superior Water Trail which is part of The Great Trail of Canada. Carden Cove A Painter’s Canvas Shaped by Time... Eons of glacial scouring wore away soft volcanic gabbros and levelled harder underlying bedrock creating the smooth topography of Lake Superior’s North Shore. These sensuous curves of the coastline from Pukaskwa National Park to Rossport were alluring subjects for Canada’s celebrated Group of Seven. From 1921 to 1928, Lawren Harris, in the company of one or more fellow landscape painters A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Franklin Carmichael and A.J. Casson, made sketching trips to this area. They camped, hiked and boated around Neys Peninsula, Port Coldwell, Sturdee Cove and the Slate Islands enduring the rugged autumn weather. The paradise of secluded beaches and polished granite points are marked with evidence of Peninsula Harbour’s more recent industrial past. For decades, rafts of pulpwood dominated the view, the booms held fast by rings drilled into bedrock on either side of Carden Cove. Head on over to our website to learn more about the Lake Superior Water Trail's access locations.

Lake Effect: The ability of a large lake to modify the local weather. Weather is the state of the atmosphere with respect to current temperature, precipitation, wind, and cloudiness. Lake Superior can modify the daily weather through a phenomenon known as lake effect. Compared to inland temperatures, shoreline temperatures can be noticeably warmer in winter and much cooler in summer. This is because water is slower to absorb and release heat than land. Habermann, R., S. Moen, and E. Stykel. 2012. Superior Facts. Minnesota Sea Grant (pub. S25), Duluth, Minn.

The LSWC is the lead steward organization of the Lake Superior Water Trail and maintains several land trust pres...erves. Did you know that there are 20 LSWC preserve islands that make up the Gargantua Islands Preserve? Situated off the coast of Lake Superior Provincial Park, the archipelago contains high natural and cultural heritage values including arctic alpine plants. The archipelago extending from Gargantua Harbour north around Cape Gargantua consists of islands ranging in size from small rocky shoals half an acre in size to ones as large as 54 acres with sheer cliffs. Checkout this video to learn more about LSWC's Gargantua Islands Preserve.
Come join Executive Director Joanie McGuffin while she has a ton of fun practicing being safe on the Lake Superior Water Trail. Being able to self rescue in a canoe or kayak means getting out there, getting into the water, and having fun. Stay tuned until the end to see "how we roll" at the Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy. The Lake Superior Water Trail encircles the greatest expanse of freshwater on Earth. For thousands of years, people have been traversing these waters engaged in everything from local fishing and travel to continental trade and exploration. The lake’s colour varies from Caribbean turquoise to deep-ocean blue. Terraced cobble beaches, brooding headlands, sweeping sand beaches and steep cliffs are all part of the Superior experience. The bond that today’s recreational paddlers have with all those that have come before is that this vast lake requires humble respect. Cold waters and wind fetch across this great expanse creates conditions demanding adequate skills and proper outfitting.
