To mark Black History Month, we're looking at the history of Vancouver Island. In the mid-1800s, at the beginning of the Fraser Canyon gold rush, BC extended an invitation to Free, Black people in San Francisco to immigrate to Vancouver Island. This invitation included the opportunity to obtain British citizenship, land ownership, and voting rights. Around 700 people settled in Victoria and its surrounding towns. :: With their arrival came many notable figures who have helpe...d set the foundations for BC, including Nancy and Charles Alexander who built the first school in South Saanich and helped build the Shady Creek United Church. :: The historic records of Shady Creek United Church, known today as Central Saanich United Church, are in the care of LTSA and date back to 1915. You can see the Shady Creek United Church and its graveyard in this record. #blackhistorymonth2021 #bchistory

To mark Black History Month, we are taking a walk through an important corner of Black history and culture here in BC: Hogan’s Alley. :: Located in the Strathcona neighbourhood in Vancouver, Hogan’s Alley was the unofficial name of an area where Black residents and businesses clustered from the early 1900s to 1970. :: With its proximity to Pacific Central Station, Hogan’s Alley became a a lively area where locals and visitors could mingle. At its height in the 1940s, the B...lack population in Strathcona numbered approximately 800. :: ::In the late 60s, Hogan's Alley was partially demolished for the Georgia Viaduct, and Vancouver lost a piece of Black history. :: Today, there are ongoing efforts to document and commemorate the neighbourhood's history, and future redevelopment plans include opportunities to honour the legacy of Black residents of Strathcona. Have you ever been to Telegraph Cove? In its past life, it was a telegraph lineman’s station, then a lumber mill. Now, this beloved tourist destination with colourful boardwalks and historic buildings is a popular vacation spot. :: Telegraph Cove’s life as a lumber mill began in the 1920s amidst the Great Depression. Despite tough economic times, this bustling, and culturally diverse lumber mill operated for 50 years. The property changed hands in 1979 and was retrofitted into a campground, RV Park and marina. :: Today, the enchanting village houses a fascinating museum (with whale bones!), and is a gateway to whale watching, grizzly viewing, and paddling the scenic Broughton Archipelago.
