A little blog post I wrote for Permaculture Women Magazine on considerations to make when choosing a permaculture library https://medium.com//how-to-choose-your-permaculture-librar

Here's a list of my favourite Permaculture Books! Some are not strictly about permaculture, but I think are still very good for developing connections to ecosystems and community-based approaches! https://www.youtube.com/watch.

Permaculture (especially when practiced in a predominantly white context) will always be problematic. This is something I've been reflecting on and struggling with for several years now. I'm happy to see that this is a conversation that has become common and is currently very active across social platforms that focus on permaculture. There is no way around it: because of permaculture's roots in a deeply colonial context, it will always be problematic.... Because of the fact that permaculture education doesn't always (or even usually) include a decolonized lens, it's true that in many cases, lots of permaculture practice involves appropriation and tone deafness with regard to social inequalities. What I've been finding however, is that permaculture means different things to different people. To me, permaculture isn't a dogma or a movement or a set of techniques, or even beliefs that I learn from my books, but rather a set of principles that ask to be infused by what we each hold important. I think that this toolbox that is permaculture must be wielded with an understanding that working with it comes the ask to honor the responsibility we have to fellow human and non human peoples - and what does that look like? I strongly feel that a decolonized lens must be used when we practice permaculture and that we must continue to educate ourselves and accept that by stepping into the role of landscape designers and designers of invisible structures that weave through our neighborhoods and cities, we have a responsibility to be allies to those who have historically been marginalized as they have inhabited the spaces we now have the privilege to enter into a relationship with. We keep learning, we keep lifting up and crediting where credit is due. We keep supporting BIPOC communities, women's work, and keeping alive the traditional knowledge of our own ancestors living and passed... This is an ongoing dialogue that we should not shy away from, however uncomfortable or difficult it may get. Hey all! I've been taking the past little while to read as much as I can, listen as much as I can, and learn about ways that I support the Black Lives Matter Movement. There are many ways that a person can support BLM. Donating funds when possible is one important way that we can support and provide allyship. I've found a local organization in Canada to donate to called Black Women in Motion, and am holding a #giveaway to help raise more funds than I could contribute by mysel...f at this time. A few years ago, I taught myself how to hammer wire, wrap stones, and create original jewelry. Creating pieces for my then Etsy shop helped me through a very difficult time of feeling lost and directionless. Well, it turns out that I have a few handmade, original pieces still stored away, just waiting for a good home! So, I'm doing a giveaway of my Dragon's Egg pendant, handmade, 1.5" long & 7/8" wide, made of smooth stone and wire, w. a vegan leather chain & quartz bead loop fastener. This is one of my favourite pieces and I would love for it to go to a good home. Pls note that I am not trying to promote my own work here. 100% of the funds from this initiative will go to BWIM. While I love the process of creating jewelry, I use my creativity in other ways these days. I no longer run my Etsy store or make jewellery for anything other than fun or unique gifts for friends and family. To enter the raffle, you can do one of 2 things: DM me or send me a message with proof you donated to the organisation, #blackwomeninmotion OR send an e-transfer for your preferred amount to [email protected]. I will donate the money on your behalf & send you proof of the donation. The winner will be announced on Sunday, July 12th! Check out BWIM at www.blackwomeninmotion.org "Black Women in Motion is a Toronto-based, youth-led organization that empowers and supports the advancement of black womxn and survivors of sexual violence. We work within an anti-racist, intersectional feminist, trauma-informed and survivor-centred framework to create culturally-relevant content, educational tools, healing spaces and economic opportunities for black womxn." - Black Women in Motion @ Kelowna, British Columbia
