Fun Fact Friday: In the last post we looked at monthly births in Alberta. This time, we're looking at the number of home births. Home births grew steadily between 2010-2014 and then stabilized between 2015-2019. But in 2020, they took off! Births at Lucina Birth Centre have also followed the 2020 trend. Hardworking midwives make it happen. Here are the birth trends in Alberta over the last 10 years. Births rise each summer and fall each winter. The gold line marks the beginning of COVID and the red line marks births through February 2021. Interestingly, summer 2020, had the lowest birth rate in the last 10 years, and this winter is following that trend. Given this information, COVID may have affected this winter's numbers, but births have trended down since 2015 in Alberta. So it seems at least from the numbers that COVID did not produce a baby boom. #Alberta #yegbirth #yeg #abmidwives Coming soon we'll look at the trends in the number of home and hospital births.
