Interesting facts about haskap berries: What does a haskap berry looklike? They are dark blue in colour, oval or cylindrical in shape and about one inch in length. The Russian varieties tend in general to be longer and larger than the Japanese ones. The skin of a Haskap is a dark blue, but with an intense crimson flesh. It has very small, almost imperceptible seeds. The juice of the berry has a naturally high brix factor (natural sugar content)

The haskap originated on a northern island of Japan, Hokkaido and the seeds were carried by migrating birds to the Russian Kuril Islands. Haskap berries have been enjoyed in Japan and Russia for centuries and are referred to as the berry of youth, longevity and good eyesight. The word haskap was derived from the word hasukappu whic...h is what the indigenous people of Hokkaido, the Ainu, named them and it means little present at the end of the branch. They are found growing naturally in northern boreal forest areas, typically in the transition areas between forest and wet areas, in North America, Russia and specifically the Kuril Islands in Japan.
