Le Cinéclub: The Film Society x Art by Lee Howard x Lugaru Since last year's poster for CFS Caligari/Nosferatu was such as hit, we decided to do another one, for The Phantom of the Opera, Tomorrow and Saturday. Always a pleasure to work with Lee! PHANTOM OF THE OPERA + LIVE musicians! (1925, U.S., 102 min., 16mm, English intertitles) Rupert Julian... Silent movie super star, Lon Chaney Sr., delivers his most iconic performance as ‘The Phantom’ in this timeless horror classic based on the novel by Gaston Leroux. Universal Studios spared no expense to deliver a lavish production that has been thrilling cinema audiences for nearly 100 years. To give you the deluxe 1920s experience, we will project it onto a large screen on actual film at its original silent speed with the added bonus of the ‘Bal Masqué’ sequence in Technicolor. And, of course, LIVE musicians will accompany all the action. Our talented line-up includes musical director Shayne Gryn on piano and organ, Noémi Braun on Cello, Beth McKenna on Clarinet and soprano Sandra d'Angelo. All of this takes place in a stunning old gothic church which only adds to the thrill. Nightmare City) "Over-the-top Spanish-Italian-Mexican production from exploitation director Umberto Lenzi; he may have made his name with jungle cannibal epics like "Cannibal Ferox", but his go-for-broke dedication to flesh-ripping offensiveness hit a crescendo in this holocaust of anti-human blood rage. Adding to the guilty pleasure is a great Italio-prog/rock/disco soundtrack that runs throughout. And we can think of no better way to screen it than as an uncut 1980-vintage 35mm print in wide-screen ‘Techniscope’.
