the things we women do. those heavy, tasking things that push down on our shoulders. things that are vital yet, their efforts unnoticed. because only when they are not done, do they become realized. we women stride on as the world goes by ///

Ayda Yoga Zanzibar is a friend and wonderful yoga teacher from Zanzibar. She asked me if I could help her make a video for a project with the purpose of sharing how yoga has impacted your life. It had to be under 1 minute and we had 30 minutes to make it... So we quickly wrote out the words, recorded her voice (just 1 take!) and I floated around her as she moved through poses. She laughed at how I was going to use all those shots in just 1 minute and I did the same, but assu...red her, "don't worry Ayda, it'll work" Edited it all together with an ap on my phone while Ayda was teaching a yoga class to students nearby and miraculously we had it ready to submit! Thanks for the fun challenge and for sharing your story, Ayda Happy Internationalyogaday

let's be real. when you search "yoga" on google images, you'll find pages and pages of skinny white women in tight spandex. no matter how deep you go, you'll eventually have to narrow your search to "black women doing yoga" or "curvy women yoga" or even "woman in hijab doing yoga" if you want to find these kind of representations. and still, the results are slim. I know this because of my involvement with a yoga studio here in zanzibar where I had tried to look for 'relatable...' images to promote yoga to the community here and it was impossible to find more than a handful of real, thoughtful images. this doesn't mean that yoga isn't diverse. it just shows how yoga is represented and seen by the mass majority - very one dimensional. I have been working on a project to get more girls and women involved in sport and physical activity in zanzibar. It was powerful to not only see this vision start to come to life, but to also be creating images that will hopefully play a part in challenging the one-sided view of yoga and fitness in general.
