Luminato Festival 18.01.2022

Introducing the Um: Museum of Water began in the UK as a collection of public offerings of personal/individual connections to water. Now, in its new iteration, Um of Water responds to and evolves with the Indigenous context of the land we are on, and the water we live with and rely upon for our collective survival. Join the Um of Water collective in conversation around process, practice, language(s), responsibility, accountability, and the necessity and urgency of paths to w...iser relationships with water and with each other. Prior to the online conversation, the programming commences with a centering of the water that begins from sunrise and continues until sunset. In March of last year, Cathy Gordon, Luminato's Festival and Community Engagement Manager, was challenged by our Access Advisory to express what she's learned from her (mostly able-bodied) perspective. In Cathy's own words: "As someone who really tries to not make people feel bad, I’m so excited (read: terrified) to share with you some of the hurtful and embarrassing mistakes I’ve made. I will not get into all of them, but let’s start with the most recent: my last blog post...." Visit our website to read the full blog post "Lesson #3: Accountability and Next Steps" and please feel free to share your thoughts. #Luminato2022 #Accessibility https://luminatofestival.com/lesson-3-accountability-next-/

Welcome to the Junction Triangle. RSVP ow.ly/MwSf50Cnkht Film Premiere + Party Nov 26, 2020... 8pm EST Originally an in-person, 3-act bicycle experience in Sept, Creative Current: Junction Triangle was postponed due to COVID. But as the world changes, so we adapt. Between the neighbourhood and the train tracks that gave it its name, are spaces that become stages - connecting place, community, and story. Filmed without an audience one week after the original date, Creative Current: Junction Triangle features the work of three of the city’s most talented rising artists, performing in the back alleys and hidden parking lots of the neighbourhood. Luminato’s Creative Current and Artery are excited to invite you to the film premiere of this performance series on Thursday, November 26, which includes the opportunity to meet the artists, producers, and fellow attendees. The event will be powered by Bramble, a new, uniquely social experience platform by Artery. Creative Current: Junction Triangle features three open-captioned short films. There will be a host who signs ASL available to answer questions.

In case you missed Celia on @theagendawithstevepaikin, quietly (?) announcing our plans for 2021, here's a recap: We're doing a festival in June 2021. What exactly does that look like? This is what we know:... --> all local artists --> all outside --> all free Who? What? Where? And most significantly, how? All in good time, art lovers and creators. All in good time. Of course, you can find a few more details in Celia's chat with Steve Paikin - watch the replay here tvo.org/video/helming-an-international-arts-festival Image: House of Mirrors, Luminato Festival Toronto 2019 Image Description: Outside walls of House of Mirrors installation with cloud-filled sky above at dusk. "Art is what helps us understand and accept how we're feeling, and takes us out of ourselves to empathize with and understand others. It both sharpens our inner focus and broadens our perspective. Yes art, especially now." ~ @lost._.things We asked you "Why art? Why now?"... This is just one of the responses we heard. Thank you to everyone who replied. Our hearts were lifted with your chorus of "Yes art, especially now." #artisimportant #artislifelifeisart #yesartmatters #torontoart

And so the saying goes the best laid plans can often go astray. In light of the recent increase in Toronto’s COVID-19 cases and to ensure the safety of our audiences, we’ve made the decision to postpone Saturday’s Creative Current: Junction Triangle event. Although we are disappointed that we can no longer take guests on a bike ride filled with secret performances, we will still be working with the incredible artists we planned to showcase this weekend to create a new surp...rise for you this fall. #MyArtWillGoOn #CreativeCurrent #Luminato

Luminato Festival 30.05.2020

Our first Creative Current event is this Saturday! We are excited to take participants on a bike tour of unsuspecting public spaces in the Junction Triangle to encounter surprise performances from some of the city’s hottest artists, and learn a bit of history about the neighborhood along the way. Fun Fact. Why is this neighbourhood named Junction Triangle? Well, it’s literally the shape of a triangle surrounded on all three sides by intersecting railway lines. For a long tim...e there was no agreed upon name for this area and it was often referred to as West Toronto or considered part of Bloordale Village. In 2009, The Fuzzy Boundaries project was created by locals to find a name and a vote was held in March 2010. Junction Triangle received 46.6% of the vote and ironically this was the first name coined for this neighbourhood back in the 1970s. The area could have been called The Wedge, Black Oak Triangle or Railtown! Our Creative Current event sold-out in less than an hour, but be sure to add your name to the wait list to be one of the first to grab tickets to our October event. https://artery.is/showcases/creativecurrent #CreativeCurrent #Luminato #JunctionTriangle #jtriangle #ArtsLovers #UniqueExperiences

There is no more fitting person to honour today, on #InternationalStrangeMusicDay, than the late great Ron Gaskin. Ron had an enormous impact on Toronto’s music scene (and beyond) as a music presenter - across a huge range of genres - and as a producer, radio host, band manager and more; he was, most significantly, a remarkable connector of people from far and wide. Ron leaves a huge legacy of musical daring in the musicians and audiences who knew him. Rest in Peace Ron Gaskin: April 16, 1949 - August 18, 2020 In his honour let’s listen to a playlist of strange and unusual music curated by Luminato’s staff: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/35RvM5G80GiqdpKAtm7Va9 (Photo from the Trent Radio bulletin board in Peterborough, Ontario, by Rebecca Campbell).
