Stand up for human rights, the dignity of ALL people, regardless of their vote, their belief or what you imagine or project their intentions to be. Be impeccabl...e in your word. Reason from a charitable place, rather than assuming bad intentions of the other person. Be intellectually honest: that is, listen to arguments from someone with opposing views and steelman, rather than strawman their position. Don't assume another other person's position or intent. Evaluate evidence and claims. Stick to facts. Be open to being wrong. Don't gossip. Social Media is like a billion people gathered around the water cooler, gossiping: Ask yourself: are you the one constantly repeating unconfirmed rumours or baseless speculation about others, spreading 'news' stories you have not confirmed to be accurate representations of reality? Spouting uninformed opinion? Ask yourself: is this true and necessary? If it isn't, then why repeat or spread it? Am I spreading this just to feel important or special, or righteous? Ask yourself if your online presence is the best use of your energies. Watch for cognitive biases, like emotional reasoning, catastrophizing, and confirmation bias. Remember that feelings aren't facts. Avoid classically unhelpful and inflammatory generalizations: "This horrible group of people [fill in the blank, e.g. gays, white men, anti-vaxxers, Palestinians, JKRowling readers, Trump supporters, criminals] are [fill in the blank, e.g. less capable of reasoning, detached from reality, narcissistic, evil, full of hate, burn small children alive, a danger to democracy, Nazis, not as virtuous as us, like monkeys, etc.] and thus, I am justified in using a form of totalitarian action against them such as [mob violence, threats, punching, doxxing, burning down sections of cities, de-platforming, getting fired, etc.] in order to make the world a much "safer and better" place. Remember that in the Attention Economy, the media's job is to hold your attention and then to sell your attention to others: human attention is best held by conflict and fear. Fear ramps up tribal [us vs. them] cognitive biases; you can override this with higher reasoning and moral principles. Put your attention to meaningful action rather than fuelling the fire of intolerance. Take action in the world instead of engaging with the false polarities presented to you. Think for yourself. Act with moral courage, even when this means calmly denying dogma, or the demonizing of people. Use conversation to look for complexities, common ground, nuanced solutions. Try your best. Share food. Peace, y'all. #humanrights #activism #freespeech #civildiscourse #reason #feelingsarenotfacts
Intolerance doesn't feel like intolerance. It feels like righteousnouss, like virtue, like saving the world from hate or evil.
