The heifers: they must have spotted something in the bush right before I snapped this pic.
We are participating in this program!
We found I nice spot to adventure out of the wind today!
Thanks for coming out to yesterday’s Winnipeg delivery in the blustery weather. It was great to see you all! For those worried about the driving, we did NOT drive home last night in the low visibility. We stayed over and came home this morning. Wian is now catching up on chores and we went for a walk in the deep snow! The tractor ruts make it more fun!

A favourite photo taken at this time last year but no snow! Pretty thankful to have so much snow on the ground at the moment.
This day on the farm.
These quiet days of December: On this Christmas Eve we are spending our time being quiet, building cheese grater implements and checking cows. It feels like our busy fall season has just come to an abrupt end. (We still have fall projects that are a work in progress). ... More farm news and photos to come in the new year. Take care! Merry Christmas!
A beautiful winter halo tonight.

For those interested in prairie, prairie women and indigenous history, Sarah Carter’s books are great. Beautifully written. Sarah Carter is a professor of history at the University of Calgary and has written extensively in the areas of women’s, Aboriginal, and western Canadian history. These books have given me insight into how I am able to be on this land and how government [ag] policy has shaped the landscapes we have come to recognize as the canadian prairie.
Restocked: We are restocking our fresh sausage varieties and other popular cuts (i.e bacon!) Managing inventory has been a bit difficult this year. We experiences increased demand March-June which cleared most of our inventory. These are often slower months for us so we were not quite ready for it as far as butcher dates and available product goes. We ran short on pigs ready for the butcher so there was a bit of a lull in pork supply through July and August. We raise all of ...the animals here on farm and had production planned for the year and so were unable to restock quickly when we ran low. We have pigs going to the butcher through fall. Back in stock: Blackburn Country Fennel and White Wine Chimichurri Sausage Tuscan Style Italian sausage Herb & Garlic Breakfast sausage Chorizo Coming Soon: Sweet and Spicy Italian Fresh Farmers sausage
A spring/summer project that turned into a fall project (it happens): Fencing this treed area for the pigs. We had to push bush to make way for an electric fence line. Because it is electric fence it is easier to manage if it is free and clear of trees and bush. This is the regrowth over the season. It is brilliant how quickly poplar root suckers grow. This edge between trees, slough and pasture is full of birds and turkeys. It is a wonderful little spot. ... We have a small group of pigs to overwinter and this will be their paddock for next spring.
I got home from Brandon delivery last evening to discover these two preparing the morning hen feed.

Road trip. Checking cows. August 30th
Oven. On. My favourite way to warm up the house on a cool fall(ish) morning.
Evening walks are my favourite... & I love fall. Such a beautiful time of year. The cattle think so too.
Thank you all! We are heading into another big delivery week (and month!) We are managing all of the things we need to manage to keep the farm running, the family happy and healthy and food deliveries going. ... As we manage the season's harvest I feel I have less time for (frequent) updates. I will send a newsletter out soon. We have been thinking a lot about our community of supporters. Your commitment to eating food from the farm is what makes this farm viable. We want to thank all of you for pre-ordering for the season. Your planning has helped us as we are able to feel confident about where all of the season bounty is going! Come winter, once everyone's freezers are full we will sit back and take a breather. Thank you! Lydia, Wian and Alastair
Our guardian dogs Buzz and Neil make it their duty to stay with the chickens on pasture all summer long. It is likely why we have had zero predation loss over the last several years. We really love these two incredibly loyal hard working dogs.
Important stuff and a well written article. https://www.theguardian.com//could-grazing-be-the-key-to-s
