The Glycation/skin connection I found something interesting this Morning and thought I would share it with you. This is mostly for US Estheticians. Most of you... were taught that Glycation causes skin aging, and pretty much every wrinkle is a sign of Glycation, (besides sundamage) something that is not taught in many other countries, because Glycation is caused by the food we eat, which as we know differs greatly across the globe, especially when it comes to ingredients and additives allowed in foods. As you all know, I'm German, and I didn't even learn about Glycation and effects on the skin until a couple of years ago! Not kidding I asked myself: Are most Americans Diabetics? From what I know, Glycation relates to the elevated blood sugar levels in people who have diabetes or pre-diabetes. That's it! Diabetics age faster. It shows in their skin. I'll post a link in the comments. After reading Dr. Zoe's article about Glycation the other day, and her mentioning Diabetes, I knew I wasn't crazy. LOL So what does it mean for people that are not diabetics, pre-diabetics, not overweight and have normal blood sugar levels? Nothing. It means nothing! Their bodies can handle sugar and "Glycation" is not happening for them. Period. In other words if your fasting blood sugar level is below 100, which is normal, your wrinkles are not caused by Glycation. So why is high blood glucose such a problem in the US? I believe I found the reason for that. You have High Fructose corn syrup in just about everything. HFCS is "restricted" in European countries, and some don't allow it at all in their food. Read on: Why does American food contain so much high-fructose corn syrup while European food does not?------by Jacob Cohen, Independent Strategist In the US, as in many countries, there are agricultural subsidies to ensure local farmers can compete with foreign growers. One of the most subsidized crops is corn. One source I found (grist.com) says the US produces 32% of the world’s corn. It’s a multi-billion dollar crop (something like $60B+.) that probably doesn’t need subsidizing but those subsidies started during the Depression and aren’t going away. This gets interesting when you compare corn to sugar. The subsidies make the price of corn cheaper than it should be. So much cheaper that it’s less expensive in the US to process corn into a sweetener than it is to buy sugar from foreign growers. (The US isn’t as good at growing sugar cane as other countries.) This is pretty nuts if you research the differences in how these two sweeteners are made. Corn is nowhere near as sweet as sugar cane. To do this it must dissolve in the matrix of lipids and proteins............ ...you need only know that, if what you are trying to get into the skin is not lipid -soluble, you are going to have a harder time getting it through the stratum corneum. Why is this important? If you are using a gel, for example, with water-soluble Vitamin C, you will have to apply alot of Vitamin C to get just a little into the skin. On the other hand, if you use a penetration enhancer like propylene glycol or oleic acid in the formula, it will provide entry channels in the stratum corneum that will allow more Vitamin C to get into the skin. Wetting the skin before applying a product will also enhance penetration.........you can get more than twice the amount of an applied substance into moist skin than you can get into dry skin."
