You believe in God and in the afterlife because it makes more sense to you and it's the most reasonable explanation to the creation of intelligent life & the universe, also for meaning in life when facing the absurdity of death and what is temporary in the light of eternity. We're a 'speck of dust in a huge uncaring universe' according to (+) nihilists' happy emo' philosophy, so we might as well make the most of our life 'without purpose' b4 it all ends and we dissolve, but I think God put the thought of eternity in our minds for a reason.
